Job description

About us

Abergeldie is a majority locally owned contractor with over 30 years’ experience in Australia and New Zealand. We work on some of the region’s most challenging projects, spanning water and utilities, bridges, roads, rail, energy and community infrastructure. Our people share one purpose: delivering the complex infrastructure needed to build better communities.

About the opportunity

Due to continued growth, we are seeking an Inhouse Lawyer - Contracts and Delivery to join Abergeldie’s in-house legal team, advising on major infrastructure projects across Australia and New Zealand. This role can be based in either our Sydney, Brisbane or Melbourne offices with hybrid work options available.

You’ll step into a visible, career-defining role, partnering with executives, project leaders and clients to influence strategy and manage risk and help to deliver national significant projects. In this hands-on role you will:

  • Work across the full project lifecycle, from pre-contract through to delivery.
  • Advise on a broad range of contract models, including D&C, EPC, lump sum, target cost, cost reimbursable, alliances, frameworks and joint ventures.
  • Lead front-end contracting, including drafting, negotiation and risk assessment.
  • Provide clear, practical advice on contract risk, disputes and compliance to support decision-making.
  • Build strong relationships with executives, delivery teams, and clients to resolve issues effectively.
  • Help refine internal legal processes, policies and templates to improve efficiency and embed best practice.

Beyond projects, you will also gain exposure to insurance, PPSA and governance matters, privacy and data protection, supplier and service agreements, and workplace relations issues. You’ll contribute to compliance frameworks such as modern slavery, anti-bribery and competition law, while supporting broader risk management initiatives across the business.

This breadth provides exposure rarely offered in private practice, giving you a genuine platform for progression towards senior leadership roles.

What you’ll bring to the team

  • Qualified lawyer with strong front-end construction and infrastructure experience, gained in private practice or an in-house environment.
  • Strong negotiation and drafting skills, and confidence working across both pre-contract and delivery phases.
  • Strong stakeholder management skills and the ability to engage confidently with senior executives, delivery teams and clients.
  • Commercially minded and pragmatic, providing practical, business-focused advice that supports project success.
  • Broader generalist experience across areas such as insurance, governance or risk will be highly regarded.
  • Motivation to take on a role with greater visibility, leadership exposure, and the opportunity to step towards senior legal counsel or general counsel responsibilities.

Why you should work with us At Abergeldie, you’ll take on a role with genuine breadth, impact and progression. You’ll work alongside senior leaders and clients on nationally significant projects, with exposure across front-end contracting, disputes, governance and risk. We offer hybrid and flexible work arrangements, professional development and CPD support, and a collaborative, values-driven culture where your advice shapes executive decision-making.
