Job summary

The Independent Education Union of Australia NSW/ACT Branch Ultimo Office is seeking an experienced Industrial Officer to provide high-level advice and representation on a broad range of industrial matters for union members.

You will lead bargaining and draft agreements within the non-government education sector, contribute to industrial strategies, and work autonomously as part of a supportive team committed to social justice.

Qualifications

• Experience in industrial relations advocacy and representing members before tribunals.
• Experience working in unions and knowledge of Fair Work Act 2009.
• Ability to review complex documentation and negotiate settlements.
• Strong written and verbal communication, negotiation and interpersonal skills.
• Self-motivated with initiative and ability to manage multiple tasks.

Are you an experienced, adept Industrial Officer passionate about rights?

The Independent Education of Australia NSW/ACT Branch represents more than 30,000 teachers and support staff in NSW and the ACT employed in Catholic schools, independent schools, and other non-government organisations such as early childhood education and care and post-secondary colleges.

THE ROLE

As an experienced Industrial Officer who has worked in unions, you will be responsible for the provision of high-level advice and representation of union members across a broad range of industrial matters, including termination of employment, disputes, anti-discrimination, professional accreditation issues and Work Health and Safety.

You may also take the lead in bargaining and drafting for single and multi-enterprise agreements within the non-government education sector.

The role also contributes to the formulation of our union’s industrial strategies and campaigns.

WE’RE LOOKING FOR SOMEONE WITH:

• Tertiary qualifications in industrial relations, law or an associated discipline.
• Previous experience working in unions.
• Detail-oriented proficiency with strong analytical, computational and problem solving skills.
• Demonstrated ability to review and assess complex/technical documentation.
• Demonstrated expertise in advocacy including preparing, presenting and arguing industrial issues in representing union members before the Fair Work Commission or other tribunals and courts.
• Experience in instructing and supporting counsel in conduct of cases.
• A high level of initiative, ability to self-manage and resolve complex matters.
• Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills, particularly written, verbal, negotiation skills.
• Thorough understanding of the federal industrial system and relevant legislation, including the Fair Work Act 2009 (Cth).
• Ability to work autonomously as well as collaboratively within a team environment.
• Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
• Competency with Microsoft Office, including Excel.
• A commitment to trade unionism and/or social justice.
• A driver’s licence is desirable.

WE ARE OFFERING:

• We offer very competitive salaries.
• Superannuation of 15%.
• Generous leave provisions including, up to 11 days of Time in Lieu per year, additional annual leave, and closedown leave over the Christmas period.

You will generally work from 9am-5pm but occasional weekend and evening work will be required. Overnight travel may also be necessary on an occasional basis.
