Job description

At HDR, we specialise in engineering, architecture, environmental and construction services. Our global team of more than 15,000 employees is united by our values and strengthened by our employee-owned culture. We collaborate across disciplines, leverage global expertise, and empower our people to create solutions that make a lasting impact.

The Role

Due to a growing pipeline of work, we're looking for a Hydraulic Engineer to join our Building Engineering Services team, preferably based in Sydney, with Melbourne also considered for the right candidate.

Supporting the delivery of complex building services, mission critical and data centre projects across Australia and the broader region, this opportunity is ideally suited to an engineer with approximately 2-6 years' experience who enjoys hands‑on design, technical problem solving and digital delivery.

We're seeking someone who enjoys taking ownership of hydraulic designs and developing coordinated BIM models directly within Revit. This role is well suited to an engineer who wants to remain closely connected to the design process while continuing to build technical consulting expertise.

Working alongside Senior Engineers, Associates and technical leaders, you'll contribute to the design and delivery of high‑quality hydraulic engineering solutions across all stages of the project lifecycle.

What You’ll Be Doing
  • Contribute to the design and delivery of hydraulic building services systems from concept through to construction.
  • Prepare engineering calculations, reports, specifications and design documentation.
  • Design and coordinate potable water, sanitary drainage, trade waste, stormwater, rainwater harvesting, recycled water, hot water and gas systems.
  • Develop and maintain hydraulic BIM models and coordinated Revit documentation.
  • Work directly within multidisciplinary BIM environments to coordinate hydraulic services with architectural, structural, mechanical and electrical disciplines.
  • Support authority approvals, design reviews and technical assessments.
  • Assist in resolving technical design challenges and multidisciplinary project interfaces.
  • Participate in site inspections, contractor coordination and construction-phase services.
  • Continue developing your technical capability, project delivery skills and industry knowledge.
What Makes This Role Different?

This is an opportunity to work on projects that sit at the forefront of Australia's digital infrastructure market.

You’ll contribute to complex mission critical facilities where resilience, reliability, scalability and energy performance are essential to success.

We're looking for engineers who enjoy being closely connected to the design process and taking ownership of their technical deliverables.

Supported by experienced local leaders and HDR's global network of specialists, you'll gain exposure to innovative engineering solutions while accelerating your technical and professional growth.

What You’ll Bring
  • Passionate about hydraulic engineering and delivering quality technical solutions.
  • Comfortable taking ownership of design tasks and project deliverables.
  • Interested in developing their expertise across complex building services and mission critical projects.
  • A proactive problem solver who enjoys working through technical challenges.
  • Detail-oriented and committed to producing accurate, coordinated and compliant design deliverables.
  • Collaborative and comfortable working within multidisciplinary teams.
  • Curious, growth-oriented and eager to learn from experienced engineers and project leaders.
  • Enthusiastic about BIM workflows and digital engineering delivery.
Ideally, You’ll Have
  • Approximately 2-6 years' experience in hydraulic building services consulting.
  • Experience designing hydraulic services systems including water, sewer, stormwater, recycled water, gas and hot water systems.
  • Proficiency in Revit and BIM workflows, with the ability to directly develop and coordinate hydraulic models as part of the design process.
  • Working knowledge of the National Construction Code (NCC), Plumbing Code of Australia (PCA), AS/NZS 3500, WSAA Codes and other relevant standards.
  • Experience preparing technical reports, engineering calculations, specifications and design documentation.
  • Experience using AutoCAD and hydraulic modelling or calculation software.
  • Experience working within multidisciplinary project teams and coordinating designs across disciplines.
  • Membership of, or eligibility for membership with Engineers Australia.
  • Data centre or mission critical project experience will be highly regarded.
Why Join HDR?
  • Employee ownership model – share in the success you help create
  • Major project exposure – work on complex data centre and digital infrastructure projects shaping the future of connected communities
  • Career development – mentoring and support from experienced technical and project leaders
  • Hands‑on technical delivery – stay actively involved in both design and BIM modelling
