Job summary

HorizonOne Recruitment Pty is seeking an Assistant Accountant (APS5) in Canberra to manage day-to-day financial operations within a small team in a large APS department.

The role blends financial reporting, asset management and internal budgeting with opportunities for future acting APS6 roles, in a supportive environment with EL1 and APS6 guidance. Hybrid working supports work-life balance.

Qualifications

• Substantive (ongoing) APS5 status as an accountant or financial auditor, section 26 transfer.
• Strong technical accounting skills, including journals and reconciliations.
• Experience in financial reporting, asset accounting, internal budgeting or financial audit.
• Experience using SAP and TM1 is highly desirable.
• Clear communication and ability to build productive stakeholder relationships outside finance.
• Strong attention to detail and analytical problem-solving.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate day-to-day financial management for the department and help produce information for the Executive.
• Complete day-to-day and month-end processes to meet internal and external reporting deadlines using SAP, TM1 and Excel.
• Prepare journals and complete reconciliations.
• Support financial management of departmental projects and assets, including internal budgeting and reporting.
• Work with internal stakeholders to resolve issues arising from day-to-day finance operations.
• Assist with preparing the department’s annual financial statements.
• Help prepare responses to Questions on Notice and ANAO requests.
• Produce accurate, timely financial information and reports for the Executive and stakeholders.
