Job summary

Mackay Regional Council is offering a Horticulture Trainee position (AT2702) to learn hands-on plant care from propagation to landscape maintenance. The program runs for two years, with completion leading to a Certificate III in Horticulture.

The role is ideal for school leavers or those changing careers who are eager to grow skills in horticulture while supporting community green spaces across Mackay region.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

Do you have a passion for plants and want to help shape the spaces our community enjoys every day? Join Mackay Regional Council as a Horticulture Trainee and discover a rewarding career where nature, creativity and the environment come together. In this hands‑on role, you'll learn how to identify, grow, propagate and care for a diverse range of plant species while gaining experience at our Natural Environment Centre and Mackay Regional Botanic Gardens. You'll help create and care for the green spaces that bring our community together, from beautiful parks and gardens to vibrant streetscapes across the region.

Timeframe And Qualification

This is a 2-year traineeship. On completion you will obtain a Certificate III in Horticulture. This is a traineeship and is ideal for school leavers, those new to the industry or seeking a career change. Eligibility criteria apply if you hold existing qualifications in this area.

What You Will Need To Succeed
  • A passion for working with plants and an interest in the cultivation and propagation of plants.
  • Ability to work both autonomously and in a team.
  • Good verbal communication skills.
  • You're a team player, with the ability to learn from, and grow positive relationships with others.
  • The ability to complete manual handling tasks.
  • Successful completion of Year 10 is desirable but not required.
