Job summary

Sydney Water is seeking experienced heritage professionals to join the Heritage Team as Heritage Advisors. You will manage legislative obligations for Aboriginal cultural heritage, built heritage, archaeology, and moveable heritage, supporting multiple business areas to enable project outcomes.

You will work with autonomy within a team of heritage specialists to conserve Sydney Water’s operating heritage assets and ensure assets remain in use, with hybrid work options and a permanent role based

Qualifications

  • Minimum 3–5 years relevant industry experience assessing and managing cultural heritage (built and/or Aboriginal).
  • Experience delivering heritage assessments and securing statutory approvals for built/Aboriginal heritage projects.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare heritage impact assessments and approvals under the Heritage Act 1977.
  • Prepare Aboriginal Heritage Due Diligence assessments and AHIPs under the National Parks & Wildlife Act 1974.
  • Prepare, review and advise on strategic heritage documentation (heritage registers, conservation plans, etc.).
  • Provide specialist advice on cultural heritage compliance and management.
  • Support other heritage initiatives, including training, policy development, and tours.

We are seeking experienced and enthusiastic heritage professionals to join our growing team. We have two exciting Heritage Advisor positions in our Heritage Team and are looking for experienced heritage professionals to help manage Sydney Water’s legislative obligations for Aboriginal cultural heritage, built heritage, archaeology and moveable heritage.

About the role:

As a Sydney Water Heritage Advisor, you will be expected to support the business with clear and accurate technical advice on built heritage, archaeology and/or Aboriginal cultural heritage. You will support the Heritage Team in preparing a range of heritage assessments and approvals to facilitate project and operational outcomes for the business. You will work with and support multiple areas of the business to ensure that Sydney Water meets its asset creation and maintenance requirements, including environmental assessment teams, system planners, project managers and delivery contractors.

In this role you will be expected to work with a high level of autonomy as part of a team of dedicated heritage professionals who manage and conserve Sydney Water’s significant portfolio of operating heritage assets and ensure that active heritage assets remain in use.

What you’ll do:

This role is suitable for heritage professionals who thrive on a fast-paced high-volume workload environment and who have a passion for delivering excellence. In this role your primary duties will include:

  • Preparing heritage impact assessments and approvals under the Heritage Act 1977.
  • Preparing Aboriginal Heritage Due Diligence assessments and applications for Aboriginal Heritage Impact Permits (AHIPs) under the National Parks & Wildlife Act 1974.
  • Preparing, reviewing and advising on strategic heritage documentation including heritage registers, conservation management plans, interpretation plans, archival recordings.
  • Providing specialist advice to Sydney Water staff and contractors on cultural heritage compliance and management, supported by Senior and Principal Heritage Advisors.
  • Supporting other heritage business initiatives including training, process and policy development, heritage tours and storytelling opportunities.
About You:

In addition to a relevant tertiary qualification in cultural heritage, archaeology, conservation, heritage architecture, interpretation or a related discipline, we are looking for someone with:

  • A minimum of 3-5 years relevant industry experience assessing and managing cultural heritage (built and/or Aboriginal).
  • Experience and technical competency in delivering heritage assessments and securing statutory approvals for built and/or Aboriginal cultural heritage projects, with demonstrated ability to align business outcomes.
  • A strong working understanding of heritage legislative framework under the Heritage Act 1977 and/or National Parks & Wildlife Act 1974.
  • A working understanding of the key heritage implications applicable to the planning and delivery of infrastructure and development (experience with industrial heritage assets is highly desirable).
  • Demonstrated experienced in preparing high-quality heritage assessment and management documentation for heritage sites or projects.
  • Organisational skills and success in prioritising competing requirements and meeting program schedules in a high-volume work environment.
  • Competent report writing skills needed for preparation of heritage assessment and statutory approval documentation.
  • Effective oral communication, negotiation and interpersonal skills needed for dealing with stakeholders to achieve project outcomes.
  • Demonstrated ability to foster teamwork and to develop and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
Required:
  • Tertiary qualification in cultural heritage, archaeology, conservation, heritage architecture interpretation or a related discipline.
  • A minimum of 3-5 years relevant industry experience assessing and managing cultural heritage (built heritage, archaeology and/or Aboriginal).
  • NSW Driver’s Licence.
