Job description

Dale Price Opals is a well-established and growing opal mining and processing company based in Coober Pedy. With a strong reputation in the industry, they rely on a diverse fleet of heavy machinery and vehicles to support their mining operations. They are now seeking a skilled and dedicated Heavy Machinery Mechanic to join their team and ensure their equipment remains in peak condition.

About the Role

Our client is looking for an experienced and self-motivated Heavy Machinery Mechanic to maintain and repair a variety of equipment critical to mining operations. This full-time position (Monday to Friday, 40 hours per week) offers potential for overtime and career progression within a growing company.

The role involves working on a fleet that includes:

  • Caterpillar bulldozers (D9L and D10R)
  • Finlay screening plant
  • Komatsu loader and excavator
  • Rubbish trucks, graders, loaders, bobcats, and other older machinery
  • Fleet vehicles (including light vehicles)

The successful candidate will be responsible for servicing, diagnosing faults, and carrying out repairs across a variety of equipment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform routine maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs on heavy machinery, ensuring operational efficiency.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical issues.
  • Service and repair air conditioning systems on heavy equipment and fleet vehicles.
  • Carry out maintenance on light vehicles as part of the companys fleet.
  • Operate and maintain a 6-8 ton truck with a crane attachment (relevant licenses required).
  • Work independently in a remote environment, sourcing parts and problem-solving as needed.
  • Develop and implement effective preventative maintenance schedules to minimise downtime.
  • Collaborate with the team to ensure safety, efficiency, and productivity.
What Were Looking For
  • Proven experience working with heavy machinery, particularly Caterpillar bulldozers, Finlay screening plants, and Komatsu machines.
  • Strong knowledge of hydraulic systems and troubleshooting skills.
  • Experience working on light vehicles and air conditioning systems is essential.
  • Heavy-duty mechanical expertise with hands-on repair experience.
  • Valid truck licence (suitable for operating a 6-8 ton vehicle) and crane operation certification (or willingness to obtain).
  • Experience with earthmoving equipment, rubbish trucks, graders, loaders, and bobcats is highly desirable.
  • Ability to work autonomously, troubleshoot effectively, and adapt to challenges in a remote environment.
  • A strong work ethic, reliability, and commitment to safety.
  • Remote location: Sourcing parts and conducting repairs in a mining environment requires problem-solving and strategic planning.
