Job description

Head of Venue | Melbourne

Melbourne | Full-time permanent | Onsite | $95,000–$105,000 + 12% super

Ever walked into a venue and immediately started imagining what else it could become?

More events. New clients. Brilliant experiences. Spaces buzzing with activity.

If that's how your brain works, we might have something pretty special for you!

We're partnering with one of Melbourne's most iconic arts organisations to find a Head of Venue who can bring fresh ideas, commercial flair and plenty of energy to an incredible space in the heart of Southbank.

This is an opportunity to make your mark. To find new ways to bring people through the doors, create memorable events and unlock the venue's commercial potential.

And here's the thing. We're not looking for someone who just wants to run the show. We want someone who loves being part of it.

What you'll be doing

You’ll take the lead on growing the venue's commercial offering, bringing together business development, event delivery and venue operations.

One day you might be meeting a prospective corporate client, the next developing a creative event package or bringing together suppliers and internal teams to deliver something spectacular.

You’ll be:

  • Finding new business opportunities across venue hire, corporate events, launches, private functions and unique experiences.
  • Building relationships that turn into bookings, repeat business and long-term partnerships.
  • Getting creative about how to make better use of the venue's spaces.
  • Owning the event journey, from the first conversation and proposal through to planning, logistics and delivery.
  • Working closely with hospitality partners, suppliers, technical teams and internal stakeholders.
  • Managing budgets, pricing, revenue targets and commercial performance.
  • Finding smarter, more efficient ways to deliver exceptional experiences.

One thing worth knowing: This isn't a traditional Head of Venue role with a big team behind you. You'll be working alongside some fantastic internal teams and partners, but you'll also be hands‑on with the planning, administration and day‑to‑day coordination.

If you're someone who loves both winning the business and making the magic happen, you'll feel right at home.

A little about you

You've probably spent a good part of your career in venues, premium hospitality, hotels, events or conferencing.

You know how to sell an experience, bring an event to life and keep the details running beautifully behind the scenes.

You're commercially minded, incredibly organised and a natural relationship builder. You're also the person who spots an opportunity everyone else has walked straight past.

Pret perhaps? That sentence is in the original: "Perhaps you've grown event revenue, secured new corporate clients, improved venue utilisation or found clever ways to turn quieter spaces into profitable experiences."

You’ll bring:

  • Proven experience in venue sales, business development or commercial events.
  • Strong hands‑on experience coordinating and delivering events.
  • Confidence managing clients, suppliers, budgets and competing priorities.
  • A great eye for detail and a knack for solving problems before they become problems.
  • The ability to work independently, collaborate across teams and get things done.
  • Genuine enthusiasm, curiosity and plenty of initiative.

You don't need to have held the title of Head of Venue before. You might be an ambitious Venue Manager, Events Sales Manager or Commercial Events Manager who's ready to take ownership of something bigger.

What matters is that you've got the experience, commercial instinct and drive to make things happen.

What makes this opportunity exciting?

For starters, this isn't just another venue.

You’ll be part of an organization that sits at the heart of Melbourne's arts and cultural scene, surrounded by creativity, extraordinary talent and experiences that bring people together.

You’ll have the opportunity to introduce new clients, dream up fresh commercial ideas and help shape what the venue's future looks like.

And you'll be able to see the impact of your work. More events. Stronger relationships. New revenue. Brilliant experiences.

There's something pretty satisfying about that!

The practical stuff

The role is full‑time and predominantly onsite in Southbank.

As you'd expect in a theatre and events environment, there will occasionally be evening and weekend commitments. Additional hours are managed and compensated under the applicable enterprise agreement and employment arrangements, so this isn’t an expectation of unpaid overtime.

Salary: $95,000–$105,000 + 12% superannuation.

Sound like your kind of opportunity?

If you’re commercially savvy, love creating memorable events and aren’t afraid to roll up your sleeves, we’d love to meet you.

Bring your ideas, your energy and your experience. We’ll bring the opportunity to make something special happen.
