About the opportunity

The Faculty of Engineering at the University of Sydney is one of the most highly regarded engineering faculties in the world, ranked 2nd in Australia and 57th globally (Times Higher Education (THE) Rankings by Subject 2026). Backed by the reputation, resources and location of Australia’s first university, the Faculty is delivering a clear strategy built on strong foundations, with bold ambition and collective excellence in research and education at its heart. The School of Civil Engineering has been part of the University since 1882 and is world renowned for its work in structures and geomechanics. It is ranked 3rd in Australia and 31st globally for civil and structural engineering (QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026). Its academics lead internationally recognised research centres in structural engineering, geomechanics, and wind, waves and water, and their work has shaped Australian Standards® for structural design. With this depth of talent, the School has the potential to further strengthen its international standing and set the benchmark in civil engineering research and education.

We are seeking a distinguished academic to lead the School into its next phase as Head of School, School of Civil Engineering. You will be responsible for fostering a collegial, inclusive and high-performing community grounded in trust, accountability and collective responsibility for excellence.

Key responsibilities include ensuring excellence and impact in teaching and research outcomes, maintaining accreditation standards, enhancing the student experience, and meeting financial targets. The Head of School holds formal financial and people management delegations, with responsibility for effective governance, fair and transparent allocation of resources and workload, risk management and workplace health and safety. The role also leads the recruitment, development and retention of talented staff. Full details are provided in the candidate information pack. This is a role for a leader who wants to make a real impact.

You will have experience nurturing a positive, high-performing culture, bringing colleagues with you through clear communication and genuine engagement, and managing difficult conversations with calm and integrity. You will have a clear commitment to equity, collegiality and leadership as service, in alignment with the University’s values of trust, accountability and excellence. You will also bring experience working with industry and a wide network of academic, industry and professional relationships that you can draw on to enhance the standing of the School, the Faculty and the University.
