Job description

Suncoast Christian College is seeking an experienced and passionate Head of Department (Humanities) to provide strategic and instructional leadership across our Humanities learning area. This is a 1.0FTE role, commencing 1 January 2027. Located on the beautiful Sunshine Coast, Suncoast Christian College is a well-established Pre-prep to Year 12 co-educational Christian College of more than 1,100 students. We are committed to providing an education that develops students academically, personally, socially and spiritually, equipping them to make a positive difference in their communities.

About the role:

Reporting to the Head of Secondary, the Head of Department (Humanities) will provide leadership, coordination and vision for the Humanities department.

You will play a key role in:

  • Leading and developing a high-performing, collaborative and supportive Humanities teaching team.
  • Providing strong instructional leadership and mentoring to teachers.
  • Leading the development, implementation and ongoing review of quality curriculum, teaching, learning and assessment across Years 7-12.
  • Ensuring curriculum and assessment programs align with the Australian Curriculum Version 9 and relevant QCAA syllabus requirements.
  • Supporting teachers to develop engaging, purposeful and differentiated learning experiences that meet the needs of diverse learners.
  • Overseeing assessment quality, moderation, feedback and academic outcomes across the department.
  • Monitoring academic data and using evidence to identify trends, areas for improvement and opportunities to enhance student outcomes.
  • Supporting teachers in their professional growth and development, including beginning teachers working towards full QCT registration.
  • Building a positive departmental culture characterised by collaboration, professional accountability, innovation and care for staff and students.
  • Managing departmental resources and budgets effectively.
  • Working collaboratively with the Director of Studies, Director of Teaching & Learning and other members of the Secondary Leadership Team.
  • Contributing to whole-College curriculum development, strategic priorities and policy development.
  • Supporting opportunities for students to extend their learning through co-curricular, enrichment and academic opportunities.

The role also includes a teaching load, providing the successful candidate with the opportunity to remain connected to classroom practice and model excellence in teaching.

About you:

We are looking for an educational leader who combines strong curriculum expertise with genuine people leadership.

You will ideally bring:

  • Appropriate tertiary teaching qualifications and current QCT registration.
  • Demonstrated experience teaching Humanities subjects, preferably across Years 7-12.
  • Strong knowledge of the Australian Curriculum and QCAA requirements.
  • Proven leadership and team management experience, ideally including experience leading or developing a teaching team.
  • A demonstrated commitment to high-quality teaching, learning and assessment.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to build positive relationships with staff, students and parents.
  • Excellent organisational, analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • A commitment to using data and evidence to inform teaching and improve student outcomes.
  • The ability to lead change positively and contribute to the ongoing development of the College.
  • A genuine commitment to supporting the professional growth and wellbeing of colleagues.
