Job summary

Katherine Town Council is seeking a Governance Officer – Working Group to join our Governance team. The role focuses on coordinating meetings, governance processes and ensuring transparent, compliant practices while engaging with the Katherine community.

Reporting to the Manager Governance and Risk, you will manage agendas, minutes and action tracking, support policy development, and monitor legislative obligations across council activities.

Qualifications

  • Minimum two years of experience in a similar or related role.
  • Ability to prepare minutes, agendas and governance documentation.
  • Strong understanding of governance processes and compliance.
  • Knowledge of legislation, regulations and By-Laws.
  • Experience in Local Government preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate working group and committee meetings, including agendas, reports, minutes and action tracking.
  • Support stakeholder engagement and communication.
  • Assist with strategic projects and reporting.
  • Develop, review and maintain governance documentation and policies.
  • Monitor compliance with legislation and By-Laws.
  • Assist internal audit and risk management activities.
  • Maintain governance registers and record keeping.

Governance Officer – Working Group

Are you highly organised, detail-focused and confident coordinating meetings, governance processes and a diverse range of stakeholders?

Katherine Town Council is seeking a Governance Officer – Working Group to join our Governance team within the Office of the Chief Executive Officer.

Reporting to the Manager Governance and Risk, this role provides governance, coordination and administrative support to Council working groups and committees. You will play an important role in ensuring meetings and governance processes are well organised, transparent, accountable and compliant, while supporting effective engagement between Council, stakeholders and the Katherine community.

About the role

This is a varied role suited to someone who enjoys organisation, governance, stakeholder engagement and making sure things get done. Key responsibilities include:

  • Coordinating working group and committee meetings, including agendas, reports, minutes and action tracking.
  • Supporting stakeholder engagement and communication.
  • Assisting with strategic projects and reporting.
  • Supporting the development, review and maintenance of Council policies, procedures, guidelines and governance documentation.
  • Monitoring compliance with relevant legislation, regulations and Council By-Laws.
  • Supporting internal audit, corporate risk management and governance reporting.
  • Maintaining accurate governance registers, including actions, decisions and membership records.
  • Ensuring decisions and outcomes are documented, tracked and communicated to relevant stakeholders.
  • Supporting workshops, consultations and other community engagement activities.
  • Assisting with governance training and guidance for working groups and committees.
About you

We are looking for someone who can confidently manage competing priorities while maintaining a high level of accuracy and professionalism.

To be successful, you will have:

  • Exceptional organisational, planning and prioritisation skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build professional relationships with a broad range of stakeholders.
  • The ability to accurately prepare meeting minutes, agendas and other documentation.
  • Strong attention to detail and critical thinking skills.
  • An understanding of legislation, statutory obligations and organisational policies.
  • The ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise professionalism when dealing with executive-level matters.
  • Knowledge or experience in policy coordination.
  • A minimum of two years' experience in a similar or related role.

Experience in Local Government, a Diploma-level or higher qualification in Governance or Business, and experience with EDRMS/information management systems will be highly regarded.
