Job summary

Macquarie University Health invites applications for a General Surgical Fellow to support colorectal and upper GI surgery services at the Macquarie University Wallumattagal Campus, North Ryde.

The role offers part-time (0.7FTE) appointment for 12 months with opportunities to participate in education, research and clinical trials, under senior consultant mentorship in a private hospital setting.

Qualifications

• MBBS or equivalent qualification and general registration as a medical practitioner in Australia.
• FRACS in general surgery (or equivalent) preferred however not mandatory.
• Active (or eligible to be an active) Accredited Practitioner of Macquarie University Hospital.

Responsibilities

The Role

Macquarie University Health is seeking a General Surgical Fellow to provide clinical services in the colorectal and upper GI surgery teams.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to:

• Experience elective and emergency general surgery in a private hospital environment.
• Be mentored and work alongside senior consultants in colorectal and upper GI surgery.
• Be exposed to a wide range of complex surgical cases including robotic surgery.
• Generate manuscripts and research projects;
• Participate in research projects and clinical trials
• Supervise and train students, residents and other Doctors in Training
• Contribute to educational and research activities with Macquarie University Health

About You

You will be an aspiring general surgeon, who is committed to clinical care, education and research. You will be keen to work in an innovative multidisciplinary environment and be passionate about providing patient centred care. You will have experience working within busy inpatient settings, while balancing supervision, teaching and mentoring of junior staff and medical students.

Key Accountabilities include (Not limited to)

Clinical

• Provide clinical service within the scope of practice as granted by the Macquarie University Health Medical Advisory Committee and approved by the Macquarie University Health Board to patients of Macquarie University Hospital and the Clinic.
• Participate in and fulfil the duties and responsibilities as set out in the rotation description provided for the term of the position.
• Provide clinical management and timely treatment of patients (both inpatient and outpatient) delegated by the clinical supervisor(s) and the care of colleagues within the discipline.
• Provide a specialist liaison and consultation service to patients in conjunction with the clinical supervisor as required by other accredited practitioners who provide medical care at or in connection with Macquarie University Health.
• Liaise and work effectively with nursing staff, allied health professionals including psychologists, occupational therapists and other allied health staff involved in patient care including the broader care team.
• Supervise and commit to maintain accurate documentation and completion of electronic medical records in a timely manner to reflect clinical decisions, tests, procedures and discharge diagnoses and instructions.
• Perform ward rounds, independently or with others such as junior medical staff and/or allied health staff, the admitting doctor and/or clinical supervisor(s), as required for inpatient care at Macquarie University Hospital as far as possible within the normal working hours of the ward
• Participate in regular formal handover and ensure effective communication between clinicians and senior nurses (with particular regard to deteriorating patients), while meeting standards of care.
• Comply with MUH and MQ Health policies and procedures and the Macquarie University Health By-laws.
• In consultation with the admitting doctor, ensure appropriate arrangements are made for patients on discharge from Macquarie University Hospital to maximise continuity of care, patient-centred care and good health outcomes – including timely and respectful liaison with patient's family, carers and general practitioner as appropriate.
• Adapt clinical practice in accordance with contemporary evidence based best practice.
• If required participate in an on-call roster (under the direction of clinical supervisor(s) or senior medical staff) and when on call, be within an accessible distance in order to respond to urgent and precipitous events.
• Make decisions concerning the patient(s) in consultation with your immediate supervisor (s) and team.
• Promptly advise your supervisor, admitting doctor or senior medical staff of any concerns you have regarding a patient’s condition or management

Administrative

• Attend Discipline, Program and Macquarie University Health meetings as required by supervisor(s) or the Director of Medical Services.
• Participate in Discipline/Program Morbidity and Mortality meetings and other meetings deemed compulsory by supervisor (s) or the Director of Medical Services.
• Provide a minimum of four weeks’ notification of planned/intended leave arrangements (personal or work related) ensuring adequate coverage is arranged and signed off by primary supervisor and the Clinical Workforce Coordinator.
• Notify your supervisor(s) immediately of any event that may give rise to a complaint or medico legal claim and complete the appropriate incident notification forms.

Quality and Research Activities

• Participate in Discipline, Program, Hospital and Macquarie University Health quality assurance and risk management projects
• Ensure compliance with the standards contained within the ACSQHC National Safety and Quality Health Service Standards for accreditation
• Participate in clinical quality activities – such as peer review, binational colorectal cancer audit, clinical practice audit, root cause analysis etc.
• Participate in Discipline and/or Program Mortality and Morbidity meetings, Sentinel Event meetings, or peer review meetings and root cause analysis teams as requested by your supervisor.
• Systematically review clinical performance of self and discipline.
• Participate in patient complaint reviews and responses to patient complaints.
• Perform any other research activities, as directed.

Supervision, Training and Education

• Provide multidisciplinary clinical supervision, training and education in patient care environments including for nursing, allied health, junior medical staff and other members of the multidisciplinary team.
• Assist, supervise and teach junior medical staff.
• Attend and actively participate in relevant education sessions and grand rounds.
• If required, present at and represent Macquarie University Health at relevant internal and external conferences, grand rounds, and similar sessions in support of advancing the academic mission of Macquarie University Health.
• Participate injournal clubs for relevant Discipline and/or Program.

Professional development, continuing education and maintenance of standards

• Participation in relevant college training program and exam preparation (if required).
• In partnership with clinical supervisor (s) seek opportunities to ensure development of clinical experience.
• In partnership with clinical supervisor (s) develop and implement a professional development, education and training plan.
• Complete and provide evidence of Continuing Medical Education and Development.

Qualifications

• MBBS or equivalent qualification and general registration as a medical practitioner in Australia
• FRACS in general surgery (or equivalent) preferred however not mandatory
• Trainee of the relevant specialist College (if required)
• Active (or eligible to be an active) Accredited Practitioner of Macquarie University Hospital.
