Job summary

V/Line in Victoria is seeking a Ganger Class 1 to lead a field-based team responsible for rail infrastructure maintenance and renewal across the network. This hands-on role combines practical rail engineering with leadership to keep tracks safe and reliable.

The position is remote, with shifts across mornings, afternoons, and nights, and offers an hourly rate of AU$51.78 plus 5 weeks leave loading and a free Myki, plus a work vehicle.

• Conduct inspections of track geometry, wear and conditions; take corrective actions.

About the role

As the Ganger Class 1 is a hands on team leader responsible for overseeing the maintenance, renewal, and safety of railway infrastructure. Leading a crew of track workers, they coordinate and participate in a range of activities including track repairs, sleeper and rail renewals, crossing maintenance, inspections, and fault rectification to ensure the rail network remains safe, reliable, and operational. The role combines practical rail maintenance expertise with leadership responsibilities, ensuring work is delivered efficiently while maintaining the highest standards of safety for employees, customers, and the broader community.

This is a remote, field based position with no fixed depot or permanent work location. As work is delivered across various locations/sections of the rail network, the successful candidate will need to be flexible and comfortable working across different locations within the region as operational requirements dictate. This provides variety in day-to-day work while supporting the safe and efficient delivery of maintenance and renewal activities wherever they are needed.

Key Accountabilities include but are not limited to:

• Leading and overseeing the delivery of rail infrastructure renewal and maintenance activities, including the upkeep of rail reserves, road surfaces at crossings, pedestrian pathways, and associated infrastructure.
• Supervising and actively participating in the replacement and renewal of track components such as sleepers, rails, ballast, and fastening systems.
• Coordinating and contributing to the maintenance and repair of road and foot crossings, drainage systems, earthworks, and associated buildings or structures.
• Ensuring the effective maintenance and operational integrity of an assigned section of track, maintaining high standards of safety and reliability.
• Conducting regular inspections and monitoring of track conditions, including geometry, sleeper and fastening integrity, rail wear and creep, flooding, joint condition, and potential buckling. Implement timely corrective actions to ensure infrastructure safety and compliance.
• Responding promptly and effectively to Occupational Health & Safety (OH&S) concerns raised by internal and external stakeholders, ensuring a safe working environment.

About you

Our ideal candidate for the Ganger role is a hands on rail professional with site supervision and leadership experience, backed by Cert III Rail Infrastructure, Safe Working Certificate Level 3, High Rail Operator Level 4(desirable), and a current Driver's Licence. Safety focused and proactive, you excel at delivering rail maintenance and renewals, identifying and resolving track issues, and leading crews to achieve reliable outcomes.
