Job summary

Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine (VIFM) seeks an early-career Molecular Biologist to support forensic investigations in our accredited laboratory. You will perform DNA extraction, routine profiling and quality assurance to help identify human remains and support investigations.

Qualifications

• Bachelor-level science degree with focus in biochemistry, molecular biology or genetics.
• 1–3 years in a relevant scientific field preferred.
• Experience with DNA extraction and forensic DNA profiling (RT-PCR, STR).
• Familiarity with laboratory quality systems and accreditation requirements.
• Strong communication and relationship-building skills.

Responsibilities

• Perform laboratory decontamination procedures to minimise DNA contamination risk.
• Conduct routine DNA profiling and specimen reception procedures.
• Prepare laboratory working stocks using contamination minimisation strategies.
• Monitor stock levels and coordinate ordering of laboratory reagents and consumables.
• Coordinate maintenance and functionality checks of laboratory equipment.
• Support laboratory quality assurance and environmental monitoring programs.
