Job summary

Advanced Navigation is seeking a Lead Fiber Optical Gyroscope Engineer in Sydney, Australia to advance our FOG technology. You will design, test, and scale production of FOG-based navigation systems, collaborating across software, hardware and production teams.

The ideal candidate has a strong background in FOG physics, photonics and electro-optical systems, with a proven track record in large-scale manufacturing and delivering reliable, market-ready solutions.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's or Master's in Physics, Optics, Photonics, EE, or related field.
• Proven experience with Fiber Optic Gyroscopes (FOGs).
• Strong theoretical and practical understanding of FOG physics, including the Sagnac effect.
• Knowledge of photonics: light sources, optical fibers, couplers, modulators and detectors.
• Solid background in electro-optical systems design and integration.
• Experience with manufacturing processes for optical or precision electro-mechanical systems, especially at scale.
• Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
• Strong communication and teamwork abilities.
• Proactive, results-oriented with ownership mindset.

Responsibilities

• Lead design and development of FOG and related systems for performance and manufacturability.
• Develop manufacturing processes for FOGs with scalability for large volumes.
• Collaborate with software, hardware and production teams for seamless development.
• Analyse test data, troubleshoot issues, and improve FOG reliability.
• Stay updated on FOG, photonics, and manufacturing techniques.
• Ensure FOG meets customer expectations in demanding applications.
• Develop testing processes for fibre optic coils.
• Establish coil stress conditioning capabilities.
• Support Production Engineering with performance metrics and SPC.
• Guide design and development of fibre optic coil tooling.
