Job description

At DGroup, we don't just build infrastructure—we build long-term relationships, great projects and a business we're proud of.

We're a privately owned civil construction and hydraulics contractor delivering projects throughout Canberra, NSW and Queensland. Our reputation has been built on quality, reliability and a team that genuinely enjoys working together.

We're now looking for an experienced Financial Controller to become a key member of our leadership team.

This isn't a role for someone who wants to sit behind a spreadsheet all day.

We're looking for someone who enjoys getting out into the business, working alongside project managers and operational staff, helping them understand the numbers and make better commercial decisions.

You'll be equally comfortable presenting to senior management, mentoring the finance team, improving systems and rolling up your sleeves when needed.

If you're someone who enjoys working hard, solving problems, and being part of a team then we'd love to hear from you.

About the Role

Reporting to the General Manager and Director, you'll lead the finance function and play a significant role in the commercial success of the business.

You’ll ensure the business has accurate financial information, strong financial controls and meaningful reporting while partnering with operational leaders to improve project profitability and cash flow.

This is a genuine leadership role where you’ll influence business decisions rather than simply report on them.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead all financial reporting and compliance activities
  • Prepare monthly management accounts
  • Deliver insightful financial analysis and commercial recommendations
  • Prepare annual budgets and rolling forecasts
  • Manage cash flow forecasting and working capital
  • Oversee year-end reporting
  • Manage taxation obligations including GST, BAS, payroll tax and FBT
  • Maintain strong internal controls and governance
Commercial & Operational Support
  • Partner with Project Managers to improve project profitability
  • Review project performance, margins and forecasting
  • Monitor WIP, cost to complete and project cash flow
  • Assist with tender pricing and commercial reviews where required
  • Identify financial risks and opportunities across the business
  • Develop dashboards and meaningful KPIs for operational managers
Leadership
  • Lead, mentor and develop the finance team
  • Build strong relationships across every area of the business
  • Drive continuous improvement of finance systems and processes
  • Champion technology and automation initiatives
  • Support the senior team with strategic planning and business growth
About You

You’ll be an experienced Financial Controller or Senior Finance Manager who enjoys working in a fast-moving environment.

You’ll also bring:

  • CA or CPA qualification
  • 8+ years' senior finance experience
  • Experience within construction, civil, infrastructure, engineering or contracting businesses
  • Strong project accounting knowledge
  • Budgeting, forecasting and cash flow management expertise
  • Excellent Excel and financial systems skills
  • Strong commercial acumen
  • Outstanding communication and leadership skills
  • Experience with construction ERP systems such as Vista, Jobpac, Pronto or similar will be highly regarded.
The Person We're Looking For

Skills are important. Personality is essential.

We're looking for someone who:

  • enjoys working with people
  • isn't afraid to ask questions
  • builds relationships across every level of the business
  • is naturally curious
  • takes ownership
  • communicates openly and honestly
  • remains calm under pressure
  • wants to make the business better every day
Why Join DGroup?
  • Join a growing and successful Canberra business
  • Work directly with engaged senior leaders and director
  • Genuine influence over business decisions
  • Diverse and interesting projects
  • Supportive, down-to-earth culture
  • Modern office in Fyshwick
  • Opportunity to improve systems and processes
  • Competitive salary package
  • Long-term career opportunity

If you're looking for a role where you'll have real influence, work with great people and help shape the future of a growing business, we'd love to hear from you.
