Job summary

Australian Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry is seeking an APS 6 Finance Business Partner to support financial sustainability and informed decision‑making in the Sydney NSW area.

You will provide strategic financial advice to business areas, deliver budgeting, forecasting and financial reporting, and help manage resources effectively while ensuring compliance with public sector requirements. Experience with SAP or TechnologyOne is preferred.

As an APS 6 Finance Business Partner you will play a key role in supporting the department’s financial sustainability and informed decision‑making. Through timely, high‑quality financial advice you will help business areas manage resources effectively, identify and manage risks and meet legislative and policy obligations. Your work strengthens financial governance and capability across the organisation, directly supporting the delivery of the department’s priorities and outcomes.

The duties of the role may include some or all of the following:

• Provide strategic and operational financial advice and analysis on divisional or group financial performance.
• Deliver accurate, timely and value‑adding financial information and independent advice to internal stakeholders, including regular financial, resource and business reporting.
• Support budget and forecast preparation, analysis and monitoring including operational and capital expenditure.
• Help identify and implement improved financial management practices while ensuring compliance with relevant legislative and policy requirements.
• Work collaboratively within the section to support a high‑performing, client‑focused and solutions‑driven team with clear accountabilities and expected behaviours.

Please note that this recruitment process will initially be used to fill several vacancies in the section and that the roles may be able to be performed from any of the locations listed above. The merit pool established through this selection process, which is valid for a period of eighteen months from the date the vacancy was advertised in the Public Service Gazette, may be used to fill future ongoing and non‑ongoing vacancies in the branch where the duties are of a similar nature.

Eligibility

Who we are looking for

Knowledge and experience

Successful applicants will demonstrate:

• experience in budgeting, forecasting and financial reporting along with strong analytical skills to identify financial risks, pressures and opportunities
• an understanding of cost recovery principles and Commonwealth appropriation frameworks including departmental and administered appropriations, special appropriations and special accounts
• experience conducting complex financial analysis and providing clear, evidence‑based advice to diverse stakeholders
• knowledge of the Public Governance, Performance and Accountability Act 2013 (PGPA Act) and its application to public sector financial management and accountability
• experience collaborating across an organisation including supporting stakeholders through change
• experience using financial management information systems such as SAP or TechnologyOne to support reporting and decision‑making.
