Job summary

Torres Pilots Pty Ltd in Cairns is seeking a FIFO Launch Master (Skipper) to operate transfers to Poruma Island. You will coordinate vessel launches, crew rosters and pilot transfers to ensure safe, on-time service for regional shipping.

Master Class 5 and Senior First Aid with CPR are required; role calls for autonomous work in remote locations with flexible day/night shifts. FIFO Cairns-based, with 4 weeks leave and 220 roster days per year.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Assist oversight to ensure safe, reliable, on-time pilot transfers.
• Coordinate with Cairns/Brisbane ops, launch crew and pilots.
• Ensure compliance with procedures, SMS, fatigue management, drills.
• Monitor logs, maintenance, inductions and safety records.
• Provide technical support and keep manager informed of issues.

FIFO Launch Master (Skipper) for Poruma (Coconut) Island

Torres Pilots Pty Ltd is a privately owned & operating, providing marine pilots services to local & international shipping customers within the regions of the Great Barrier reef & Torres Straits regions.

Torres Pilots prides itself on our commitment to safety & customer service for the, efficient, reliable and on time service of marine pilotage, proven to be the largest supplier of Great Barrier Reef marine pilots & marine pilot transfer services, today our network provides services at Cairns, Thursday Island, Coconut Island and Mackay with a fleet of 6 pilot vessels & three helicopters.

The Role:

Torres Pilots seek a Pilot Vessel Launch Master for a full time position based out of Cairns to Poruma (Coconut) Island in the northeast Torres Straits. A typical day will involve checking latest shipping schedules, bookings & movements. Timely co-ordination of voyage planning including organisation of crews & pilots to provide an on-time service to shipping customers.

During down time of pilot transfer services not having to be provided, responsibilities of maintaining assets with completion of; vessel refuelling as required & maintenance in accordance with company schedules.

Qualifications:

Responsibilities:

• Assist the Managers oversight of safe, reliable, on-time and cost effective use of company resources to conduct pilot transfers.
• Communications with our Cairns and Brisbane operations team, launch crew and marine pilots.
• Ensure compliance with Torres Pilots’ procedures & SMS with regards the fatigue management plan, pilot launch operations, crew training, safety drills.
• Monitor SMS documentation for compliance with the fatigue management plan, launch logs & maintenance, crew safety inductions and drills are appropriately recorded.

Skills and Attributes:

• Proven record of competent vessel handling skills & experience required.
• Marine pilotage is 24/7, nature of the business involves flexible work hours day / night of which is an integral part of the position.
• Follow operating and reporting requirements in accordance with AMSA & NSCV standards.
• You must be able to work autonomously in remote locations.
• Have basic computer literacy skills.
• Continually liaise with the manager keeping them informed of any defects or issues that affect the performance and safety of the vessel.
• Provide technical support & information when required.
• Organisational ability, attention to detail & ability to multi task.
• Ability to work in a team environment & maintain a positive attitude under pressure.

The commencing salary is based around $100k P/A pending previous employment history & experience + additional daily living away from home allowance provided whilst on roster (220 days p/a), with 4 weeks annual leave, donga type accommodation when on Poruma Island, 12 days on / 8 days off roster, to / from work travel is included on roster days of work, FIFO Cairns based only.

Initial 6 months probationary employment term.
