Job description

We are Northrop Grumman Australia (NGA). Our 800 strong team is leveraging unparalleled global resources to deliver sovereign Defence capability aligned to the Government’s priorities across Aeronautics, Mission Critical Systems, Space and Guided Weapons. As we build our business and our capabilities, we are also developing a reputation as a great place to work. Help us define what is possible for our nation and for your career.

The Role:

You’ll be supporting Northrop Grumman’s state of the art Apache Longbow Fire Control Radar, a key target acquisition system on the helicopter and enables target detection, tracking and engagement in complex environments.

This capability is new to the Australian Army, with aircraft and radar systems only just being introduced. No one locally has deep experience yet in this capability, you’ll build it from the ground up.

You’ll train shoulder‑to‑shoulder with US OEM specialists, then step into the role as the first Australian Field Service Representative on the program for Northrop Grumman, embedded in Townsville.

From there, you become the SME others rely on, solving complex issues, working directly with NG in the USA, and helping shape how this system is supported in Australia.

If you want to stay hands‑on, build real depth on a high‑end system, and step out of the posting cycle into something more stable, this is that move.

Based in Townsville, with relocation support available. NV1 clearance required to commence.

Please note, up to 6 weeks overseas training in Baltimore, USA with Northrop Grumman Mission Enabling Services (MES) in November/December is highly likely and you must be able to attend.

Key Responsibilities

This is where you build your reputation as the go‑to.

  • Support early capability by guiding and upskilling Army maintainers
  • Diagnose and resolve complex faults on Longbow radar systems
  • Work across on‑aircraft issues and bench‑level testing/repair
  • Act as the technical bridge to US engineering (reachback support)
  • Build strong working relationships with Army, operators and other FSRs
  • Operate independently as the trusted NGA presence on site

You’ll get exposure others don’t, direct OEM access, early‑stage platform challenges, and the chance to become the person who knows this system end to end.

About You

You’re likely already in a squadron, hangar, or support environment — and you want to stay close to the aircraft, not step away from it.

  • Background in rotary wing avionics (strong preference)
  • Likely ex‑ADF or experienced in a military aviation environment
  • Strong at fault finding, not just following manuals, but understanding systems
  • Comfortable working independently and making calls when it counts
  • Able to build trust with operators and maintainers
  • Avionics (Cert IV B1/B2) or relevant engineering background
  • Current or re‑instatable NV1 clearance (required to start)

You won’t know this radar yet. You do need to want to own a system, learn it properly, and become the expert others turn to.

What we Offer

We have built our benefits to help you define your possible.

  • Professional Development – further education, leadership development, professional industry memberships and unlimited access to a range of online training
  • Purchased extra annual leave – 2 weeks
  • Salary packaging including novated car leases
  • Generous paid parental leave – 18 Weeks
