Job summary

Chaos1 Pty in Australia seeks Forward Deployed Engineers to join our Mission Operations line. You will integrate uncrewed systems, sensors and C2 into mission systems, deploying with end-users on Defence ranges and allied activities to deliver engineering impact within months.

This role covers hardware, software, autonomy stacks and testing across bench-to-field environments. A minimum of 3+ years in systems integration or autonomy is required, along with NV1 clearance and Australian citizenship.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science or related technical discipline; equivalent experience may substitute.
• 3+ years hands-on engineering across two of: systems integration, software development, autonomy and robotics, RF and tactical networks, or field operations of uncrewed systems.
• Proficiency in Linux and Python or C++, with Git and command line as everyday tools.
• IP networking fundamentals, including radios and datalinks, and diagnosing a field link drop.
• Experience integrating sensors, payloads, radios or effectors with a C2 or mission system and testing end-to-end.
• Ability to take a problem from symptom to root cause and document it for reuse.
• Clear written and spoken communication with operators, end-users and customers.
• Willingness to deploy to Defence sites and ranges for extended periods, including irregular hours.
• Australian citizenship and ability to obtain an NV1 security clearance.
• Onsite at Chaos1's XFACTORY, Sydney. This is an onsite and field role.

Responsibilities

• Build and integrate uncrewed and counter-uncrewed systems, sensors, effectors, radios and C2 into mission systems, from bench to field.
• Build and maintain hardware, software, autonomy and networking that hold systems together, including TAK, Cursor on Target, SAPIENT, MAVLink and ROS 2 stacks.
• Deploy forward with the end-user on Defence ranges and allied activities, stand systems up, keep them running, and fix issues on the spot.
• Write and maintain engineering records: interface control documents, configuration baselines, integration test procedures and change logs.
• Support test and evaluation events by instrumenting systems and capturing data with the Test & Evaluation team.
• Train and support Chaos1 operators and end-users on the systems fielded.
• Contribute to Chaos1's engineering standards, tooling and workshop practices as the team grows.
