Job summary

Australian Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry – Rockhampton QLD is seeking a Veterinary Officer to deliver expert veterinary and public health guidance across meat export and live animal operations.

You will lead a team, ensure MEVS compliance, oversee animal welfare, and manage inspections and sampling to uphold international standards.

Relocation assistance may be negotiated; ongoing training and leadership development are core aspects of the role.

Qualifications

• Demonstrated effective interpersonal skills communicating with diverse stakeholders.
• Ability to work autonomously and lead small teams.
• Strong dispute resolution and negotiation skills.
• Competence in interpreting legislation, rules, policies and codes of conduct.
• Ability to analyse information and make evidence-based decisions.

Responsibilities

• Provide veterinary and technical advice on public health, food safety and meat quality.
• Ensure compliance with Export Control Act 2020 and related legislation (MEVS).
• Maintain veterinary standards and apply national/international quality standards.
• Oversee animal welfare and report outcomes.
• Conduct or supervise ante-mortem and post-mortem inspections per AS 4696:2023 and import/export requirements.
• Contribute to veterinary emergency management and onsite plans.
• Lead, mentor and develop staff; chair weekly KPI review meetings.
• Collect samples to test for diseases and verify substance regulations.
