Job summary

Environmental Group Australia (EGA) is seeking an Experienced Geotechnical Engineer to work across civil infrastructure, land development and building projects, from investigation through to construction support. The role offers varied, technically challenging work and the chance to take on greater responsibility.

You will report to an Associate Geotechnical Engineer, mentor graduates, coordinate field programs and prepare factual and interpretive geotechnical reports with practical design

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or related field with 3–6 years of geotechnical experience.
• Chartered status or progress toward professional accreditation.
• Experience preparing factual and interpretive geotechnical reports and coordinating projects.
• Strong communication with clients and team members; attention to detail.

Responsibilities

• Plan, coordinate and deliver geotechnical investigations with limited supervision.
• Supervise drilling, test pits and in situ testing programs.
• Log soil and rock to Australian Standards and interpret results.
• Prepare factual and interpretive geotechnical reports with design recommendations.

About the Role

You will work across a diverse range of civil infrastructure, land development and building projects, from initial investigation and reporting through to construction support. Our projects are varied and often technically challenging, giving you the opportunity to broaden your experience and avoid being confined to one type of work.

You will work closely with an Associate Geotechnical Engineer who will support your technical development and progression towards a senior role.

Your responsibilities will include:

Technical and Project Delivery

• Plan, coordinate and deliver geotechnical investigations with limited supervision.
• Supervise drilling, test pits and in situ testing programs.
• Log soil and rock in accordance with relevant Australian Standards.
• Interpret subsurface conditions, laboratory results and field data.
• Prepare factual and interpretive geotechnical reports with practical design recommendations.
• Undertake geotechnical assessments and analyses for foundations, earthworks, pavements, retaining structures and slopes.
• Provide construction support, including inspections and technical advice.
• Assist clients and contractors in resolving geotechnical issues during construction.

Project Management and Commercial Responsibilities

• Assist in managing geotechnical projects from investigation through to reporting and construction support.
• Monitor project budgets, programs and deliverables.
• Liaise directly with clients, contractors and internal project teams.
• Identify and communicate changes to project scope, timing or requirements.

Mentoring and Team Development

• Provide day to day guidance and informal mentoring to graduate and junior staff.
• Review junior staff outputs, including field logs and draft reports.
• Help maintain high standards of safety, technical quality and documentation.
• Contribute to a collaborative and supportive team environment.

About You

• You are a capable and commercially aware geotechnical professional who enjoys varied work, solving practical problems and taking ownership of projects. You communicate well with clients and colleagues and are interested in developing both your technical and project management skills.
• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Geological Engineering, Geology or a related discipline.
• Approximately 3 to 6 years’ experience in geotechnical engineering or engineering geology, preferably within a consultancy.
• Sound understanding of soil and rock mechanics and geotechnical interpretation.
• Experience preparing factual and interpretive geotechnical reports.
• Experience coordinating projects and communicating with clients.
• Some experience preparing fee proposals and monitoring project costs.
• Willingness and ability to guide graduate and junior staff.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to technical quality.
• Clear written and verbal communication skills.
• Full Australian working rights.
• Experience across infrastructure, transport, land development or complex building projects.
• Chartered status or progress towards professional accreditation.
• Familiarity with Sydney ground conditions, relevant Australian Standards and local industry practice.
