Job summary

Westpac Bank is seeking an Executive Manager to lead the AI Science, Craft for Business & Wealth. You will set the technical bar, lead the craft, and build standards that enable multiple squads to deliver trusted AI at enterprise scale.

You will challenge designs, tackle hard problems, and create systems that raise technical leadership across the team. You will ensure quality, explainability, fairness, privacy and security are built in from the start while coaching Craft Senior Managers to

Qualifications

• Deep hands-on AI Science expertise with the ability to set and defend technical standards.
• Strong capability in predictive modelling, causal inference and experimentation.
• Practical experience with LLMs, retrieval and agentic workflows in production.
• Confidence across MLOps, monitoring and recovery patterns.
• A strong grounding in fairness, explainability, AI controls and responsible release decisions.

Responsibilities

• Convert portfolio priorities into practical technical capability plans across lending, servicing and advice.
• Own the technical design and methodology for complex modelling and agentic AI decisions.
• Set model and agent acceptance criteria, including factuality, unsafe advice and failure-mode testing.
• Lift data quality, leakage prevention, temporal validation, calibration, explainability and fairness across customer segments.
• Build reusable model and agent patterns, shared evaluation systems and disciplined peer-review routines.
• Embed AI risk, privacy and security controls, with clear assumptions, limitations, approvals and material risks.
• Coach AI professionals across squads and grow Craft Senior Managers as credible technical leaders.
• Partner across the AI practice, Technology and Operations to strengthen lifecycle quality, monitoring and recovery.

It’s an exciting time of growth and change at Westpac as we build deeper AI Science capability across Business Banking & Wealth (B&W). This role will sit close to the squads and take accountability for technical design, methodology and capability standards across the portfolio.

You will challenge solution designs before build, tackle the hardest problems personally and create the systems that help strong technical people become exceptional technical leaders.

Additionally, you will bring clarity where the work is complex: from predictive modelling and decision science to document intelligence, copilots and agentic workflows.

Just as importantly, you will make sure quality, explainability, fair treatment, privacy, security and evidence are built in from the start!

What you will bring to the table

• Deep, hands-on AI Science expertise, with the judgement to set a technical bar and defend it constructively.
• Strong capability in predictive modelling, causal inference and experimentation.
• Practical experience with LLMs, retrieval and agentic workflows in production-oriented environments.
• Confidence across MLOps, LLMOps, technical assurance, monitoring and recovery patterns.
• A strong grounding in fairness, explainability, AI controls and responsible release decisions.
• The ability to influence business and technical leaders while remaining close to the detail.
• Experience in business lending and wealth, credit risk or pricing decision science is highly regarded, not essential.
