Job summary

Hastings Deering is seeking an experienced Diesel Fitter to join the New Build team in Mackay. You will assemble, fit and commission brand-new Caterpillar mining and construction equipment in a state-of-the-art workshop, ensuring top quality, safety, and performance.

The role offers a Monday to Friday roster with a focus on safe, codes-compliant work and collaboration with production and engineering teams to deliver machines on schedule.

Qualifications

• Trade qualification required (Diesel Fitter/Heavy Vehicle/Plant Mechanic).
• Experience on heavy mobile equipment or mining machinery is essential.
• Strong diagnostic and fault-finding skills with emphasis on quality outcomes.
• Commitment to safe work practices and high-quality workmanship.
• Ability to work in a collaborative, high-performing team environment.
• Current valid Driver’s Licence is required.
• Experience with Caterpillar equipment is an advantage.

Responsibilities

• Assemble, fit and commission new Caterpillar equipment and components.
• Perform mechanical, hydraulic and electrical installations on new build machines.
• Conduct inspections, testing and QA checks to meet OEM standards.
• Read and interpret technical drawings and service information.
• Identify and rectify assembly and commissioning issues to ensure quality.
• Perform work safely in accordance with Hastings Deering and Caterpillar standards.
• Collaborate with production, engineering and quality teams to meet deadlines.

What you’ll be doing

As a Diesel Fitter within our New Build team, you will:

• Build Industry-Leading Equipment - Assemble, fit and commission new Caterpillar equipment and components.
• Diverse Technical Work - Perform mechanical, hydraulic and electrical installations across a range of new build machines.
• Quality Matters - Conduct inspections, testing and quality assurance checks to ensure equipment meets OEM standards.
• Technical Expertise - Read and interpret technical drawings, schematics and service information.
• Problem Solving - Identify and rectify assembly, fitment and commissioning issues to achieve quality outcomes.
• Safety First - Ensure all work is performed safely and in accordance with company and Caterpillar standards.

What you’ll need:

A successful teammate will have experience in:

• Trade Qualified - Hold a Diesel Fitter, Heavy Vehicle Mechanic, Plant Mechanic or equivalent trade qualification.
• Industry Experience - Demonstrated experience working on heavy mobile equipment, mining machinery or construction equipment.
• Diagnostic Expertise - Strong mechanical troubleshooting and fault-finding skills with a focus on delivering quality outcomes.
• Safety & Quality Focused - A genuine commitment to safe work practices and high-quality workmanship.
• Team-Oriented Mindset - Ability to work collaboratively and contribute to a positive, high-performing team environment.
• Ready to Mobilise - Hold a current and valid Driver’s Licence.
• Caterpillar Experience Advantageous -Previous experience with Caterpillar equipment is highly regarded but not essential.
