Job summary

Mission Beach State School in Queensland is inviting Expressions of Interest for a Guidance Officer. This temporary vacancy provides a counselling-focused role within a multidisciplinary team to support students, families and school staff.

The role involves advocacy, psychoeducational assessment and coordinated referrals to optimise student access to educational programs and well-being services, with flexibility for housing options where eligible.

Responsibilities

• Advocate and provide counselling, psychoeducational assessment and individual student support for educational, behavioural, career and mental health issues.
• Collaborate with parents, teachers and external agencies to deliver a coordinated support and referral service.
• Offer counselling and referral to assist students in educational, personal, social and career decisions and provide ongoing guidance.
• Conduct student observation and assessments to identify learning needs and inform educational adjustments and interventions.

Who We Are:

Mission Beach is situated on the coast; 2 hours drive south of Cairns and 3 hours drive north of Townsville.

The school was originally built in 1953 in the ‘tropical jungle' in Mission Beach. In 1993 it was relocated to Wongaling Beach due to increasing student numbers.

Wongaling is the central part of the 14 kms of beach.

Responsibilities include:

• Advocate, provide counselling, psychoeducational assessment and individual student support, recommendations and advice to students, teachers and parents concerning educational, behavioural, career development, mental health and family issues.
• Work as part of a multidisciplinary team and facilitate effective working relationships and partnerships with parents, school personnel and external support agencies in order to provide a comprehensive support, case management and referral service that optimises students' access and engagement in educational programs.
• Provide a counselling and referral service to assist students in decision making about critical educational, personal, social, emotional and career development, and provide ongoing support during the implementation phase of their decision.
• Conduct activities such as student observation and psychoeducational assessment in order to determine the nature of student learning difficulties, disability, developmental levels or psychological and emotional status in order to make recommendations for educational adjustments and interventions.
