Job description

About the opportunity

Stellar Recruitment is partnering with an Australian mining company to recruit an Environmental Officer for a greenfield critical minerals project near Mudgee.

This is an opportunity to join during the development phase and help establish the environmental systems, plans and processes that will support the project as it progresses. You’ll work within an experienced environmental team, with exposure to senior management and scope to develop your expertise across a broad range of environmental disciplines.

The project is progressing through the approvals process, with groundworks targeted for 2028, subject to approvals. The proposed mining operation involves a single open pit and day-shift mining, with substantial company-owned landholdings in the surrounding area.

About the role

Reporting to the Environmental Superintendent, you’ll combine environmental management system development with monitoring, reporting and biodiversity-related activities. Rather than simply maintaining established systems, you’ll have the opportunity to help build them.

A key focus will be developing practical management plans, procedures, forms, registers and processes, alongside supporting biodiversity management across the company’s properties.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Contributing to the development and implementation of the environmental management system.

  • Supporting biodiversity assessments, monitoring programs and management of biodiversity properties.

  • Coordinating environmental inspections and monitoring across water, air quality, noise, heritage and biodiversity.

  • Interpreting environmental data, preparing reports and supporting regulatory compliance.

  • Working with internal teams, consultants and contractors to translate environmental obligations into practical actions.

About you

You’ll be an environmental professional who enjoys variety, works well independently and is comfortable building relationships across different teams. Experience in mining is welcome, but backgrounds in resources, construction, infrastructure or a regulatory environment will also be considered.

Ideally, you’ll bring a relevant qualification in Environmental Science, Environmental Management or a related discipline, together with experience developing environmental management systems and interpreting environmental requirements. Strong written communication, organisation and stakeholder engagement skills will be important.

Experience managing biodiversity properties, coordinating biodiversity assessments or monitoring programs, and working with the NSW Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016 will be particularly well regarded.

What’s on offer

An attractive remuneration package aligned with your experience, a supportive environmental team and the opportunity to broaden your expertise as the project develops.

You’ll work a 9-day fortnight, with accommodation available for the first six months to help you settle into the area. Set among rolling green hills and established rural communities, this opportunity would suit someone looking to build a career and a life in the Mudgee region.

Long-term residence in the area is required

There is flexibility to make the move over the first six to twelve months, allowing time to plan the transition.
