Job summary

SGS Australia is seeking a scientist to join a collaborative laboratory team for algal identification, microbiological analysis, and environmental testing. You’ll work with microscopy and analytical techniques, contributing to accurate results while developing technical expertise.

The role emphasizes QA/QC, safe lab practices, and continuous learning within a NATA-accredited environment. You will report to the Laboratory Operations Manager and support the broader team.

Qualifications

• Degree in Science with background in Phycology, Marine Biology, Aquatic Biology, Aquatic Ecology, Aquaculture, or related discipline.
• 1–3 years of algal identification experience.
• Hands-on microscopy-based sample analysis and identification.
• Experience in a NATA-accredited laboratory environment.
• Experience performing microbiological analysis and testing.

Responsibilities

• Prepare and analyze freshwater and wastewater samples for algal counts and species identification.
• Conduct microbiological, asbestos, and BOD testing per procedures.
• Ensure samples processed within holding times and turnaround requirements.
• Maintain a clean, organised laboratory and calibrate instruments as required.
• Support data validation to ensure accuracy of technical reports.
