Job summary

City of Adelaide is seeking an Environmental Health Officer to support the Regulatory Services Program. You will inspect food businesses and other premises in the CBD and North Adelaide, investigate complaints and regulatory breaches, assess health risks, and provide practical advice to businesses and the community.

The position offers 0.6 FTE permanent part-time work with a starting salary of $100,153 pro rata + 12% superannuation.

Qualifications

• Experience as an Environmental Health Officer is preferred.
• Sound knowledge of relevant legislation (Food Act, Public Health Act).
• Ability to investigate complaints and regulatory breaches with fairness and defensibility.
• Strong communication skills with businesses, owners and community.

About the Opportunity

As an Environmental Health Officer within the City of Adelaide's Regulatory Services Program, you'll play an important role in protecting the health, safety and wellbeing of our community across the CBD and North Adelaide.

No two days will look quite the same. You'll inspect food businesses and other premises, investigate complaints and suspected breaches, assess environmental and public health risks, and provide practical advice to businesses, property owners and the community. You'll also prepare correspondence, notices, orders and evidence where regulatory action is required, ensuring your work is thorough, fair and defensible.

This role also offers the opportunity to look beyond day-to-day compliance. You'll contribute to community education programs, support continuous improvement across our services and explore ways technology and better processes can make it easier for our customers and our teams to do the right thing.

Working as part of a knowledgeable and collaborative Community Safety and Health team, you'll have the opportunity to make a tangible difference to the health of Adelaide while building strong relationships across a diverse range of businesses, organisations and community members.

About You

To be successful in this role you will have:

• Previous experience as an Environmental Health Officer.
• Prior experience in, or knowledge of, investigative techniques.
• Sound knowledge of the Food Act, South Australian Public Health Act, Supported Residential Facilities Act, relevant Australian Standards and Codes of Practice.
• Significant understanding of the Local Government Act, Local Nuisance and Litter Control Act, Expiation of Offences Act & Environment Protection Act.
• Thorough knowledge of the physical, biological and social sciences related to health issues.
• Ability to be adaptable and flexible and have a commitment to continuous improvement, and have the ability to review procedures and systems and to recommend changes where appropriate.
• Commitment to placing the customer at the centre of everything we do demonstrated through the provision of timely, reliable and expert advice on matters within area of responsibility.
