BHP is seeking a Mechanical Engineer for Copper SA Operations in Adelaide, SA. You will deliver specialist mechanical expertise across a large mining and metals processing operation, solving technical challenges while prioritising safety, reliability, and sustainable performance.

You will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, review designs and documents, and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives across assets, sites and stakeholders.

Qualifications

• Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering and eligibility for Chartered Professional Engineer (MIEAust).
• Strong mechanical engineering principles developed in mining, minerals processing or heavy industry.
• Experience with bulk material handling, piping, pumps, valves, tanks and hydraulic systems.
• Safety in Design principles and risk assessment integrated into engineering solutions.
• Excellent communication and leadership across multidisciplinary teams.
• Analytical mindset with attention to detail and sound engineering judgement.

We currently have a vacancy for a Mechanical Engineer, reporting to the Lead Engineer, Mechanical & Process Team within Engineering Copper SA.

The Challenge Ahead

As a Mechanical Engineer within Copper SA Engineering, you will provide specialist technical expertise across a large and complex mining and metals processing operation. Working closely with multidisciplinary teams, you will help solve technical challenges, improve asset performance, and support safe, sustainable operations across our South Australian copper business.

This is a varied and rewarding role where you'll have the opportunity to influence engineering outcomes across multiple operations, contribute to continuous improvement initiatives, and play a key role in supporting the design, operation and maintenance of critical assets. You will work with internal stakeholders, contractors, suppliers and consultants to deliver practical engineering solutions while maintaining a strong focus on safety, risk management and operational excellence.

What You'll Bring To The Role

You are an experienced Mechanical Engineer who enjoys solving complex technical problems and working collaboratively with a broad range of stakeholders. You are motivated by making a positive impact on operational performance while keeping safety and sustainability at the forefront of every decision.

To Be Successful, You Will Bring

• A Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent) and eligibility for membership with Engineers Australia as a Chartered Professional Engineer (MIEAust).
• Strong knowledge of mechanical engineering principles gained within mining, minerals processing, heavy industry, water, oil and gas, or comparable industrial environments.
• Technical expertise across mechanical systems such as bulk material handling equipment, pipework, pumps, valves, tanks, pressure equipment, hydraulic systems and slurry systems.
• Experience applying Safety in Design principles and integrating risk assessment into engineering solutions.
• Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to provide technical support, guidance and leadership across multidisciplinary teams.
• An analytical mindset, excellent attention to detail and the ability to apply sound engineering judgement to deliver practical outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

• Demonstrate visible safety leadership and actively engage with stakeholders across the operation.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to solve complex engineering and operational challenges.
• Generate and review engineering designs, technical assessments and reports.
• Provide specialist mechanical engineering expertise while ensuring compliance with engineering standards and governance requirements.
• Develop, review and maintain technical documentation, including specifications, procedures and drawings.
• Support continuous improvement initiatives that enhance safety, reliability and operational performance.
• Build effective working relationships with operational teams, suppliers, contractors and consultants.
• Champion sustainability, safety in design and robust risk management practices across engineering activities.

Work Location

This position is based in Adelaide, South Australia, working a Monday to Friday (5/2) arrangement. The role will have occasional site visits across our South Australian mining and processing assets to build stakeholder relationships, support operational outcomes and provide on-site technical expertise.
