Job summary

BHP Broadmeadow is seeking a Geotechnical Engineer to support mine planning and ensure safe ground control at one of the Bowen Basin's premier underground coal mines. You will report to the Superintendent Geology and Geotechnical and provide expert input to development, production and outbye areas.

You will assess geotechnical hazards, develop ground control plans, and liaise with cross-functional teams to ensure compliance with strata management systems.

Qualifications

• Relevant tertiary qualification in Geotechnical Engineering is essential.
• Experience with underground coal mining operations.
• Familiar with geotechnical software such as VULCAN, Deswik, AutoCAD, and LVA a plus.
• Able to work autonomously and communicate effectively with stakeholders.

• Accountable for geotechnical processes and outcomes per hazard management plans.
• Provide geotechnical advice to mine plans and ground control strategies.
• Investigate geotechnical concerns to identify risks and develop mitigation plans.
• Develop hazard management recommendations in collaboration with risk owners.

About the Role

We are seeking the expertise of a Geotechnical Engineer who can play an integral role in our mine planning processes. Located at our Broadmeadow Mine, you will have the opportunity to work at one of the premier underground coal mines in the Bowen Basin. Reporting to the Superintendent Geology and Geotechnical, you will undertake strata control and geotechnical engineering services to support Development, Production and Outbye areas of the underground mine, enable the safe execution of mine plans, provide input to mine design and liaise with relevant departments to ensure compliance to strata management systems.

Key responsibilities:

• Accountable for geotechnical processes, procedures and outcomes as defined in Principal Hazard Management Plans, site planning and operational systems
• Provide geotechnical advice in relation to mine plans, strata control, hazard management providing support to operations and short to long term planning, including the development of ground control plans
• Conduct investigations into geotechnical concerns to identify areas of risk and, where required, develop management plans with recommendations to mitigate
• Develop recommendations for the management of hazards within the operational areas in consultation with risk & control owners, ensuring effective engagement with key stakeholders
• Maintain records and report information relevant to geotechnical hazards
• Communicate with personnel, contractors & key stakeholders to share safety information and risk management activities pertaining to geotechnical hazard management
• Comply with regulations, policies, standards and procedures

About You

You pride yourself on strong analytical and report writing skills, supported by maintaining comprehensive data records. You are able to communicate effectively and build rapport with all levels of the mine operations. Success in this role requires a strong understanding of technical risk and a demonstrated commitment to safe behaviours within an operational environment.

• Relevant tertiary qualification in Geotechnical Engineering is essential
• Demonstrated working knowledge and experience of underground coal mining operations
• Experience with VULCAN, Deswik, AutoCAD, and specialist software such as LVA would be advantageous
• Demonstrated ability to work autonomously within a self-motivated team environment, utilising strong written and verbal communication skills to build productive working relationships
• Proven capability to engage effectively with operational personnel at all levels, from frontline crews through to senior management, fostering collaboration, influencing outcomes, and supporting organisational objectives
