Job summary

Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water is seeking a field-based engineer to join the assets team responsible for planned activities, maintenance, and reactive repairs across the Welsh Water asset base. You will investigate plant failures, carry out installations and refurbishments, and coordinate with contractors to ensure safe, compliant delivery.

The role requires a recognised apprenticeship in electrical engineering and a full driving licence, with strong teamwork and problem-solving skills.

Qualifications

  • Recognised apprenticeship in electrical or dual skilled engineering (NVQ Level 3 or City & Guilds).
  • Full driving licence is required.
  • Experience working in a team.
  • Experience analysing information to spot potential problems.
  • Industry experience supporting apprenticeship and adhering to H&S procedures.
  • Able to communicate well and build networks across internal departments.
  • Work to tight deadlines in challenging circumstances.
  • Awareness of regulatory bodies such as DWI and NRW.
  • Proficient with Microsoft software packages and other operational systems.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and execute activities for Welsh Water assets, including optimised maintenance and reactions to failures.
  • Investigate plant failures and perform scheduled maintenance to minimise breakdowns.
  • Carry out installations, refurbishments, and assist with commissioning to spec, on time and to procedures.
  • Audit spares and materials and order items via supervisor or suppliers.
  • Follow health & safety procedures and take responsibility for personal and colleague safety.
  • Communicate with contractors and ensure delivery aligns with safety and company procedures.
  • Update information in IT systems daily.
  • Coordinate with external contractors on capital schemes for effective delivery.
  • Organise time with minimal supervision.
  • Undertake additional duties as required.

What you’ll be responsible for
  • In this field-based role, you will be part of a team working on planned activities for Welsh Water assets eg improvement projects and preventative maintenance works, as well as reacting to failures across the area.
  • Investigating the nature of plant failures and carrying out scheduled planned maintenance work on all equipment relating to the Welsh Water asset base to minimise plant breakdowns.
  • Carrying out like for like installations, refurbishments and assisting with commissioning equipment to specification, on time and in line with company procedures.
  • Carrying out an audit of spares and materials required to complete work effectively, ordering necessary items via your supervisor or direct from supplier.
  • Following company health & safety procedures - being accountable for your own health & safety and having a duty of care to your colleagues and anyone affected by the work you do.
  • Dealing with sometimes difficult situations in a friendly, positive and professional manner, whilst striving for a speedy resolution.
  • Updating information in various IT systems daily.
  • Liaising with outside contractors on large capital schemes ensuring they are delivered effectively and efficiently in full compliance with Health & Safety and company procedures.
  • Organising your own time, handling routine work with a minimum of supervision.
  • Undertaking any other duties as required to meet the needs of the business.
About You
  • A recognised apprenticeship in electrical or dual skilled engineering awarded with an NVQ Level 3 qualification or City & Guilds equivalent
  • Full driving licence
  • Experience of working in a team
  • Experience of analysing information to spot potential problems
  • Practical experience gained in industry to support your apprenticeship and ensure full compliance and adherence to all H&S procedures
  • Able to communicate well, listen and respond appropriately to solve problems
  • Able to build and maintain good networks with internal departments
  • Able to work to tight deadlines, sometimes in difficult circumstances
  • Awareness of regulatory bodies such as DWI (Drinking Water Inspectorate) and NRW (Natural Resources Wales)
  • Able to use Microsoft software packages and other operational systems
Good to know
  • The successful candidate will participate on call (1 week out of every 7 weeks), and also participate in 260 hours planned working time.
