Australian Department of Defence – Canberra ACT
The position of the APS 6 Electrical Power Generation and Distribution Senior Engineer is critical to Hunter Class Frigate Directorate, as it is an essential component to the Technical Specialist (Electrical Distribution) EL1’s workforce, as the position provides the following responsibilities:
The Hunter Class Frigate (HCF) is one of the world’s most advanced warships, and the project is Australia’s largest shipbuilding project. The HCF program provides the foundation for Continuous Naval Shipbuilding and is bringing together global expertise from the UK, USA, Canada, Europe, and Australia to solve complex design and construction challenges.
The HCF program has introduced new approaches to Defence project and engineering management. Whilst built on traditional systems engineering and contract management approaches, Defence and the shipbuilding industry are evolving to meet the demands associated with growing and sustaining a skilled, sovereign workforce.
As a member of Team Hunter, you will be contributing to a high-impact, national capability, while fostering innovation and collaboration, and demonstrating decisive leadership. As an Australian Public Servant in Defence, you will benefit from flexible working arrangements, generous conditions, and a competitive remuneration package, including 15.4% superannuation, as outlined in the Defence Enterprise Agreement.
This role requires a highly motivated and adaptable senior engineer who can operate effectively within a challenging, complex and fast-paced engineering environment. The successful candidate will demonstrate sound electrical engineering knowledge, strong analytical skills, and the ability to work collaboratively across multidisciplinary teams to deliver engineering outcomes.
The Hunter Class Frigate program employs an innovative Engineering Design Strategy that differs significantly from traditional systems engineering approaches. The successful candidate must be comfortable working within an evolving design environment, applying critical thinking and engineering judgement to assess complex technical issues, identify risks, and develop practical solutions.
The ideal candidate will have experience in electrical power generation and distribution systems, electrical design assurance, verification and validation activities, technical risk management, and engineering change assessment. Experience reviewing electrical studies and modelling, including load flow, fault level (short-circuit current), voltage drop analysis, power quality investigations, cable ampacity studies, and protection coordination reviews, would be highly regarded.
They will possess strong stakeholder engagement and communication skills, enabling them to work effectively with design teams, supply chain organisations, verification and validation specialists, risk and schedule teams, industry partners, and senior Defence stakeholders. The ability to review complex technical documentation, provide clear recommendations, and support informed decision-making is essential. Most importantly, the successful candidate will be innovative, proactive and decisive, with the ability to manage competing priorities while contributing to the delivery of a safe, compliant and technically robust electrical design for the Hunter Class Frigate Program.
