Job summary

Asset Power Solutions in South-East Queensland seeks an experienced Electrical Engineer, Protection Systems to join our high‑performing team. You will be responsible for testing, commissioning, fault finding, and maintenance of HV protection systems across various sites.

You will work closely with engineers, technicians and clients to ensure protection systems operate safely and reliably in compliance with Australian standards.

Qualifications

• Minimum five years’ experience in high‑voltage electrical environments.
• Proven experience using Omicron and Doble test equipment for secondary systems.
• Strong understanding of Australian standards and policies.
• Ability to deliver works on time, within budget and to quality expectations.
• Commitment to safety, professionalism and effective communication.

Responsibilities

• Commission HV protection systems and schemes, including IEC 61850/GOOSE.
• Test and commission HV substations and associated plant.
• Maintain HV and LV plant, generate technical reports and test plans.
• Provide technical leadership and mentoring to technicians.
• Prepare commissioning documentation and project completion reports.

About the Role

Due to strong growth and expanding project pipeline, we are seeking an experienced Electrical Engineer, Protection Systems to join our high‑performing team. You will be responsible for the testing, commissioning, fault finding, and maintenance of high‑voltage and protection systems across a variety of sites. This role suits a technically strong professional who is safety‑focused and enjoys working in live and critical environments.

Work closely with engineers, technicians, and clients to ensure protection systems operate safely, reliably, and in compliance with applicable standards.

Key Responsibilities

• Commissioning, testing and maintenance of HV protection systems and schemes, including experience with IEC 61850 and GOOSE communications.
• Testing and commissioning of HV substations, including both secondary systems and primary plant.
• Commissioning and maintenance of HV and LV plant and assets.
• Testing and commissioning of power generation systems and power transformers.
• Onsite protection relay testing, protection studies, Autocad drawings, arc flash studies, earthing studies, HV concept designs, load flow calculations and detailed technical reports.
• Providing technical leadership, mentoring and training to technicians.
• Prepare commissioning and testing documentation, protection test plans, and detailed technical reports at project completion.

Essential Requirements

• Minimum five years’ experience in high‑voltage electrical environments.
• Proven experience using the Omicron and Doble suite of equipment for secondary system testing.
• Strong understanding of Australian standards, legislation and policies.
• Demonstrated ability to deliver works in line with project quality, schedule and budget requirements.
• Strong commitment to safety, professionalism and effective communication with internal teams and external stakeholders.

Desirable requirements

• Engineering Degree or Diploma in Power Systems. Registered Professional Engineer of Queensland (RPEQ) well regarded.
• HV Switching authorisation well regarded.
• Experience with IEC 61850 and GOOSE messaging, including use of IED Scout
• Power station and substation experience.
• Commissioning and maintenance of HV and LV plant and assets.
• Testing and commissioning of power generation systems and transformers.
• Technical supervision experience, mentoring and training of technicians.
