The opportunity we have available

Organised within the Chief Operating Officer Group within the department, Information Technology (IT) Division's purpose is to connect people and technology, empowering the Department to excel.
IT Division is responsible for the consolidated provision and support of stable and secure IT Systems, applications and services to all departmental users across all States and Territories, including our Indian Ocean Territories and Norfolk Island, as well as supporting seven Ministerial offices, six Groups, and coordination with portfolio entities.

The Division provides the digital collaboration and communications tools necessary to connect geographically dispersed workforce and to optimise hybrid working arrangements. We manage industry and public facing digital systems, deliver desktop services to over 2,200 staff, support over 30 office locations across Australia and oversee the department's cyber security capability.

The Director of IT Architecture is a pivotal role within the Strategy, Architecture and Cyber Security Branch of the Information Technology Division that includes a strategic and delivery focus on all aspects of the department's technology portfolio. Reporting to the Chief Technology Officer and leading a small IT Architecture focused team, you will oversee the development of the Architecture Strategy and Roadmaps, driving strategic goals through technology portfolio management and support of IT project delivery. The role requires active engagement with the senior executive across the department and the broader commonwealth to align the current and future technology plans with the outcomes of the department and government as a whole.

As Director of IT Architecture, you will influence and lead the department's enterprise architecture direction by implementing and sustaining a contemporary approach to technologies and IT architectural governance to deliver diverse government functions, effectively filling the role of ICT Chief Architect for the department.

The key duties of the position include
What will you do?

As the Director of IT Architecture, you will:
  • Develop, maintain and renew enterprise architecture oversight of the department's technology portfolio to accurately inform key decision makers and support investment decisions and delivery prioritisation.
  • Develop architectural decisions for approval of the Chief Technology Officer.
  • Refresh and maintain the department's Technology Strategy and Ten-Year Technology Plan.
  • Oversee and manage the department's IT architecture practice, including managing the operations of IT architecture governance.
  • Ensure that all department's projects and programs that contain IT components are aligned to the Australian Government Architecture and Digital Accessibility standards as well as the department's technology strategy, corporate plans and business priorities.
  • Liaise closely with Federal Government agencies including Digital Transformation Agency, to align and influence whole of government directions.
  • Maintain knowledge of relevant legislative and reporting requirements, Australian and International standards, quality assurance procedures and best practice models.
  • Lead architectural guidance and selection throughout the capability lifecycle.
  • Compliance reporting across the whole IT environment including applications, infrastructure, cloud, and systems.

To be successful in this role, you will need to demonstrate your capability by:
  • Extensive understanding of enterprise IT infrastructure, networks, software platforms cloud environments and digital accessibility principles.
  • Demonstrated experience in leading and managing teams within the IT architecture domain whilst taking personal responsibility for meeting objectives and progressing work.
  • Have demonstratable analytical, critical thinking and problem-solving skills and experience in linking departmental strategies to operational outcomes whilst working with clients to formulate achievable, and agreed, outcomes.
  • Be highly self-motivated and capable of working with uncertainty in a fluid and evolving environment.
  • Be skilled in managing client expectations and reaching negotiated outcomes.
  • Have proven experience in leading by example and fostering teamwork within their own team and with other internal and external teams.
  • Contribute to broader departmental outcomes in consultation and collaboration with staff, peers and other colleagues.
  • Identify skills and capability needs and support staff development to enhance the delivery of services.
  • Experience in planning branch initiatives, budgets, and procurement activities.
Multiple enterprise architecture certifications and extensive professional experience in the IT architecture environment are critical to this role.
