Job description

Our DNA: We believe in the power of inspired young people.

We’re the Y WA.

The Y WA (formally YMCA) is a branch of the global Y not-for-profit organisation, formed in 1844 and have been contributing to our local Australian communities since 1851. We believe in the power of inspired young people, focused on flourishing outcomes through the delivery of education, childcare, youth services, and community programs to thousands of Australians every day. None of this would be possible without our special Y People and Leaders!

We are seeking to establish a pool of Education Assistants (interested in working at our new Yr7-9 campus in Mirrabooka, Perth, and potential additional Yr7-9 campuses in WA) for permanent and fixed term/perm full-time, part-time vacancies which may arise during the 2025 and 2026 school year. Appointments may be offered at any time for vacancies that commence during this period.

Our School:

We like to do things differently at The Y.

As a CaRE (Curriculum & Re-Engagement) School, we’re focused on working with students at their point of need. Through on-entry assessments, consultation and collaborative approaches, we formulate strong Individual Education Plans, providing classroom support to work towards future goals via a combination of programs. This includes Literacy, Numeracy, Direct Instruction, STEAM (focussing on a range of WA Curriculum subjects) and social & emotional development sessions.

Our main focus is to assist students to re-engage with education in a way that makes sense to them, dismantling the barriers and creating a chance for them to flourish.

Our Yr10 - 12 campus (offering WACE options, school-based traineeship support, vocational pathways and a university bridging course) opened in Mirrabooka in February 2022. Due to considerable demand, we’re opening our Yr7 - 9 campus in 2026. Everything will be new! Works are commencing with a brand-new fit out including an open plan collaborative learning area, purpose-built classrooms, breakout rooms, a kitchen and counselling rooms. We’re planning to begin with two learning hubs. Each hub will be capped at 30 students, having a Teacher, four Education Assistants and one Youth Worker per hub.

The Y School 7-9 pathway is developed and delivered in partnership with Mastery Schools Australia, focussing on the Science of Learning.

The curriculum at our Yr7 – 9 Campuses will be delivered through a combination of Direct Instruction and STEAM lessons, providing students the opportunity to develop their knowledge in Literacy and Numeracy, as well as explore their passions across a range of subjects within the WA Curriculum.

We uphold the Y’s values of Respect, Honesty, Responsibility & Caring through providing high-quality educational experiences for all of our students

Your Impact:

As Education Assistant you’ll get involved in our new campus from the ground up. To start you’ll be provided extensive and focussed training in the art of ‘Direct Instruction’ and learn how to support Teachers with the delivery of breakout sessions during class activities. Once settled you’ll play a key role in our student learning hubs, assisting with the teaching of literacy, numeracy and social skills. You’ll also work closely with Youth Workers and School Counsellors while engaging respective agencies to support students with mental health conditions, physical health requirements and social & emotional wellbeing. But ultimately your mission is to support a learning environment to encourage students to appreciate education and truly flourish in their futures.

  • $73,671 to $76,771.50 + 12% Super per annum
  • Plus, substantial salary packaging benefits (up to $18,550 per annum)
  • Permanent or fixed-term full-time and part-time positions with exciting future career opportunities
  • Ongoing professional development, training, and professional support
  • Plus, buy a NEW CAR & save on tax (Novated Leasing on offer)
  • Corporate healthcare discounts (up to 8%)
  • Refer a friend incentive ($500)
  • Free employee assistance program

You’ll be great in this role if you…

  • Hold a Certificate III or IV in Education Support (or suitable equivalent) that is recognised in Western Australia
  • Are known for your highly developed interpersonal skills
  • Have knowledge of Direct Instruction (desired but not essential, as we will provide full on-the-job training)
  • Can obtain a current National Police Check and Working With Children Check
  • Seeking to work for a WA-based NFP making a real difference to student’s lives by demonstrating real wrap-around service provision with unwavering focus and commitment to safeguarding our Young People
