Title: Ecologist

Summary:
Abel Ecology is seeking an ecologist for ecological assessment and management on a range of development
projects in support of a wider team.

About Abel Ecology:
We are a small but well-established company that specialises in ecology and bushfire. Our head office is in
Springwood and our regional office is in Cooma in the Snowy Mountains. Our objective is to offer high-quality
services to clients in government, commercial and residential sectors. The successful applicant will be joining a
team of around 10 excellent, dedicated professionals with a range of skills and expertise.

About our work:
Our ecological work includes flora surveys, vegetation mapping, biodiversity monitoring, habitat monitoring,
threatened species monitoring, management plans and impact assessments (including BDARs).

About the role:
The projects you will support will include large infrastructure projects and smaller projects in a diverse range of
sectors including residential, energy, local and state government, and water. The role is based in NSW as part of
a regional team and will require some intrastate travel.

To be successful in this role you will:
• Have a recognised tertiary qualification (bachelor’s degree or higher) in Botany/Ecology.
• Have high level plant identification skills.
• Hold 2+ years relevant industry experience in a consulting role.
• Have the ability to use GIS to collect, analyse, interpret and communicate ecological data.
• Have the ability to work independently on ecological tasks and activities and in remote locations.
• Have experience in planning and implementing ecological fieldwork for general and targeted surveys.
• Have a strong understanding of New South Wales and Australian legislation and applicability to environmental
and ecological reporting.
• Be expected to work under minimal supervision within a defined area of responsibility. This will include being
responsible for delivery of ecological/environmental reporting as part of a larger project.

• Be responsible for checking the quality and accuracy of your own work. You may also be responsible for assisting
others through providing guidance, training and feedback.
• Have well-developed literacy, analytical, written, and verbal communication skills.
• Experience in preparing a range of high-quality consulting reports, including for environmental assessments
(planning approvals), monitoring, and management.
• Strong project, budget, and client management skills.
• Demonstrated proficiency with MS Office and GIS software.
• Hold a full driver’s licence.
• Be willing to become a full member of Ecological Consultants Association of NSW Inc.
• Be prepared to relocate to the Blue Mountains or within commuting distance of Springwood.

Desirable experience and qualities:
• Demonstrated experience and skills in business management.
• Experience in NSW environmental law will be well regarded.
• Experience in NSW planning will be well regarded.
• Qualification as an arborist.
• Graduate Diploma in Bushfire Protection.
