Job description

The Australia Sector, with over 1,200 employees across Australia, Canada, Germany, and the UK, is seeking an Laboratory Manager based in Brisbane to join our Engineering Services division. This is a 14-month fixed-term contract.

The role is critical for ensuring WHS compliance at the Hypersonic Structures & Materials Laboratory (HSML) and the Thermal Management Laboratory (TML) at Eagle Farm, QLD. You will drive scientific and operational excellence, ensure regulatory compliance, and foster innovation across regions.

Your responsibilities include planning and scheduling laboratory activities, maintaining complex scientific equipment, and ensuring safety and compliance. The laboratories focus on materials research and process development for high-temperature materials and structures.

The key duties include:

  1. Collaborating with WHS, engineering, risk owners, and stakeholders to maintain compliance, including risk assessments and documentation.
  2. Maintaining and calibrating scientific equipment, coordinating external maintenance, and managing procurement activities.
  3. Conducting audits, maintaining records, and planning laboratory activities.
  4. Managing hazardous materials, housekeeping, and stock of PPE and consumables.
  5. Overseeing onboarding and competency of laboratory users, and supporting laboratory operations.
  6. Participating in site meetings and communication with colleagues.

To succeed, you should have:

  • Experience managing a hands-on laboratory environment.
  • Knowledge of safety management and risk assessment.
  • Strong communication skills for diverse stakeholders.
  • Ability to build positive relationships and work effectively in a team.

Qualifications or training relevant to laboratory management are required. A B.Eng in Mechanical, Aerospace, Chemical, or Materials Engineering, or equivalent experience, is desirable. Candidates must hold or have recently held an NV1 Australian Defence security clearance.
