Job summary

Transport for NSW in Narrabri is seeking an experienced District Works Manager to oversee planning, development and delivery of road maintenance programs on about 470 kilometres of state highways in North West NSW.

You will lead a dispersed team, manage budgets and schedules, and drive safety and quality while engaging with stakeholders and clients to achieve objectives.

Qualifications

  • Four-year engineering qualification from an Australian university or equivalent overseas qualifications.
  • Experience in planning, estimating, scheduling and budgeting for engineering works.
  • Familiar with WHS requirements, enterprise agreements, environmental responsibilities and quality management standards.
  • Strong communicator who builds relationships with clients, team members and stakeholders.
  • Possess a current unrestricted Australian driver’s licence and willingness to travel.

In this role, you'll:

Oversee the planning, development, and delivery of all road maintenance programs and projects within the works centre area, ensuring services are delivered in line with agreed standards, targets, and business objectives.

You’ll be responsible for executing maintenance and construction on approximately 470 kilometres of state highway network across North West NSW. This role provides a rewarding mix of operational leadership, stakeholder engagement, strategic planning, and people management for a geographically dispersed team.

The District Works Manager will also be responsible for:

  • Planning and managing road maintenance programs and projects to meet works centre business objectives and client needs, achieving agreed time, cost, quality and scope outcomes.
  • Leading and managing road maintenance staff and physical resources through effective work allocation, workforce planning, skills development, continuous improvement initiatives, and proactive workplace relations management.
  • Driving competitiveness and performance by implementing commercial systems, promoting innovation, and maintaining a strong focus on the works centre’s core service delivery functions.
  • Developing, implementing and improving systems of work to ensure high standards of workplace health and safety and environmental management, in line with Transport Agency policies, quality principles, and legislative requirements.
  • Building and maintaining effective relationships with clients, stakeholders and the community, acting as the primary point of contact for all road-related projects, programs and issues.
  • Providing strong ethical leadership and governance by aligning unit strategies, plans, processes and priorities with Transport Agency and Government objectives, while managing the full lifecycle of minor contracts as the Transport Agency Representative.
  • Adequately resourcing and making available staff to manage incidents on the network as required

This is an ongoing full-time role located at Narrabri.

TfNSW take the WH&S and the management of fatigue of our employees seriously therefore to be eligible for this role it is a requirement that you must reside within 75 kms driving distance of Narrabri depot.

About You

You hold a four-year engineering qualification from an Australian university or equivalent overseas qualifications.

You are experienced in planning, estimating, scheduling and budgeting for engineering works, and you are confident managing a directly employed workforce.

You are familiar with WHS requirements, enterprise agreements, environmental responsibilities and quality management standards, and you apply these in your day to day work.

You are a strong communicator who works well with people at all levels. You build positive relationships with clients, team members and internal and external stakeholders to achieve great outcomes.

You are solutions focused and help create a positive workplace culture, inspiring teams to deliver high quality, customer focused projects.

You hold a current unrestricted Australian driver’s licence and are willing to travel when required.
