  • Fixed, Full-Time opportunity (up to 5 years) to work with a high-performing and passionate team.
  • SES Grade 1: $225,000 - $290,600 Total Renumeration Package.

The Department of Justice and Community Safety is seeking a Director - Policy to provide a critical role within Integrity, Regulation and Legal Services, Gaming and Liquor unit.

About the Business Unit

Gaming and Liquor (G&L) advises the Minister for Casino, Gaming & Liquor Regulation on the development and implementation of liquor and gambling legislation and regulation, and on current and emerging gambling and liquor-related issues.

The Business Unit is responsible for delivering and further developing the Victorian Government's strategic response to liquor and gambling issues and for developing and implementing the government's policy on the various gambling licensing processes. It is the primary government point of reference for industry, community and government on liquor and gaming issues.

About the Role

The role of the Director, Policy is responsible for leading and managing a team of policy officers providing high-quality and authoritative strategic policy advice to support the Minister for Casino, Gaming and Liquor Regulation and DJCS senior executive in relation to responsible gambling and liquor policy, and the regulatory framework for both gaming and liquor.

The role will support and facilitate stakeholder engagement and the integration of advice to the Minister for Casino, Gaming and Liquor Regulation, on responsible gambling and alcohol consumption and regulatory matters and the development and/or implementation of a range of gaming and liquor policy, legislative and regulatory initiatives. The Director will contribute effectively to the overall integration of the work of business unit.

Some of your duties will include:

  • The effective contribution to Gaming and Liquor's overall strategic and operational effectiveness as a member of the Gaming and Liquor Senior Leadership Team, through considered and expert advice and by demonstrating inspiring and values-based leadership.
  • Provide the highest level of timely and strategic advice and support to the Executive Director, Gaming and Liquor, the Deputy Secretary, the Secretary and the department's Ministers.
  • Lead the development of policy and legislative reforms in gaming and liquor to implement the government's policies and priorities.

About you

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • A record of accomplishment at senior management level and experience in the implementation of high-profile strategic policy projects.
  • Understanding (or an ability to quickly obtain an understanding) of the legislative, structural and policy issues related to the Victorian gaming and liquor industries.
  • It would be desirable for the successful candidate to have some experience or exposure to providing policy advice on gaming and/or liquor
  • Sound strategic thinking and problem-solving skills combined with an understanding of how to work effectively across government.
  • Highly developed communication and negotiation skills with the ability to lead and manage in a complex and sensitive environment.

Qualifications/requirements

  • An appropriate qualification is highly desirable.
