Job description

The National Library of Australia is a vibrant national institution at the heart of knowledge, creativity and discovery. Established under the National Library Act 1960, it collects and connects the nation’s published heritage – from books, newspapers and government publications to today’s digital resources – and makes them accessible to Australians everywhere.

Through Trove, its world-leading digital platform, the Library opens up millions of stories, ideas and collections to more than 20 million online users each year. It partners with over 900 libraries, museums and archives, curates a collection valued at more than $1 billion, and engages hundreds of thousands of people annually through research, public programs and exhibitions.

The Director-General, appointed by the Governor-General, will lead this important national institution into its next chapter – inspiring staff, fostering an inclusive and engaged organisational culture, championing accessibility, and driving digital innovation. This role calls for a leader who can build on the Library’s heritage while expanding its reach and relevance for the future.

About You

We are seeking a proven leader who can:

  • Set a clear vision and inspire others to achieve it.
  • Build and sustain a high-performing, motivated workforce and inclusive culture.
  • Champion public access, collaboration and innovation.
  • Represent the Library nationally and internationally with authority and influence.
  • Lead with integrity, judgement and influence across government, cultural, research and community sectors.
