Job summary

Greening Australia, Sydney or Perth preferred with flexibility across Australia, seeks a senior leader to manage a nationally significant carbon portfolio. Reporting to the Executive Director, you will drive strategy, governance and delivery across carbon programs while balancing commercial outcomes with environmental impact.

You will lead cross-functional teams, strengthen client relationships, manage regulatory compliance and deliver sustainable growth across a national footprint.

Job description

Lead a nationally significant carbon portfolio that connects commercial performance with environmental impact.

Location: Sydney or Perth preferred, with flexibility across Australia

Employment: Ongoing

Salary: circa $170,000

Reports to: Executive Director

The opportunity

Greening Australia is seeking an experienced senior leader to provide strategic and operational leadership across our carbon portfolio. This is a significant leadership role with accountability for quality project delivery, commercial performance, portfolio profitability, governance, client relationships and sustainable growth.

You will lead carbon programs from contract execution through to successful implementation, balancing strong commercial outcomes with environmental impact and operational excellence. Working across Carbon, Land Restoration, Growth, Impact and Operations, you will ensure projects are delivered safely, efficiently and in line with regulatory, contractual and organisational requirements.

The role has two direct reports, the Associate Director, Carbon and the Director, Land. It also plays an important part in building leadership capability, succession and resilience across the portfolio.

What you will lead

• Set the strategic and operational direction for Greening Australia's carbon business and translate organisational priorities into effective portfolio plans.
• Lead the commercial delivery of the carbon portfolio, including financial performance, project profitability, utilisation, pipeline development and delivery efficiency.
• Oversee portfolio planning, resource allocation and delivery performance across complex carbon programs.
• Build trusted relationships with clients, landholders, government agencies, project partners, auditors, regulators and industry organisations.
• Support business development, major client relationships, contract negotiations and environmental market opportunities.
• Ensure strong governance, regulatory compliance and risk management, including the Carbon Industry Code of Conduct and AFSL requirements.
• Lead, coach and develop a high performing team while strengthening workforce planning, succession and organisational capability.
• Promote safe project delivery and a positive, inclusive and accountable culture.

What you will bring

• Significant senior leadership experience in carbon, environmental markets, ecological restoration, natural capital, land management, commercial delivery or a related field.
• A demonstrated ability to lead complex portfolios spanning operational planning, resource allocation, delivery performance, governance, compliance and risk.
• Strong commercial acumen, including experience with budgets, project profitability, pipeline development, client relationships and sustainable delivery models.
• Sound knowledge of carbon project delivery, environmental markets, ACCU Scheme requirements or comparable regulatory frameworks.
• A strong record of building relationships and influencing clients, landholders, government, partners, auditors, regulators and internal stakeholders.
• Experience leading, coaching and developing high performing teams, including workforce and succession planning.
• Highly developed communication, negotiation and influencing skills, together with sound judgement and a strong commitment to ethical and compliant delivery.
• A current driver's licence and willingness to travel as required.

Highly regarded

• Relevant tertiary qualifications in environmental science, ecology, natural resource management, carbon, business, finance, law or a related discipline.
• Experience with ACCU Scheme projects, environmental planting methodologies, FullCAM or other recognised carbon frameworks.
• Experience in carbon trading, environmental credit sales, project investment, corporate partnerships or environmental market transactions.
• Experience working with Traditional Custodians, landholders, government, environmental partners or regional delivery partners.
• Understanding of nature based solutions, biodiversity, natural capital, restoration delivery and emerging environmental market opportunities.
