Job summary

Lake Macquarie City Council is inviting applications for a Development Compliance Officer in Wallsend, NSW. The role focuses on investigating unauthorised building work, land use and non-compliant development, with enforcement as required and court representation when needed.

You will analyse legislation, apply Council policies and provide clear guidance to residents and developers, balancing service with regulatory duties for a safe, compliant community.

Qualifications

• Certificate IV in a relevant discipline or equivalent experience.
• Knowledge of Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979 and Local Government Act 1993.
• Strong written and verbal communication, including investigation, negotiation, mediation and conflict resolution.
• Experience in investigations, compliance, enforcement, building, planning or related field.
• Current Class C Driver Licence.

Responsibilities

• Investigate complaints and conduct inspections relating to unauthorised building work, land use and non-compliant development.
• Interpret and apply relevant legislation, development consents, Council policies and procedures to assess compliance matters.
• Provide timely, accurate, and practical advice to customers and stakeholders about obligations and steps to address non-compliance.
• Build constructive relationships and use negotiation, mediation and conflict resolution skills to achieve appropriate outcomes.
• Prepare and serve statutory notices, orders and other regulatory documentation in accordance with legislation.
• Manage a diverse caseload, prioritising inspections, investigations, follow-up actions and enforcement activities.
• Maintain accurate records and prepare reports and supporting documentation, including representing Council in court when required.
