Job summary

All Energy Contracting is seeking a Design Lead for the Project Management Office in Australia. The role manages in-house and subcontracted design across a portfolio of renewable energy projects, ensuring consistency, contractual alignment, and cost-effectiveness.

Ideal candidate has 8+ years in engineering design or design management on utility or renewables projects, with experience coordinating multi-discipline design and managing design consultants. Strong stakeholder skills are essential.

Qualifications

• Bachelor of Engineering. Electrical is preferred.
• 8+ years in engineering design or design management on utility or renewable projects.
• Experience coordinating multi-discipline design on construction projects, ideally with an electrical background.
• Experience managing design consultants or D&C subcontractors.
• Sound judgement on cost, constructability and compliance; strong stakeholder skills.

Responsibilities

• Prepare and run the Design Management Plan and deliverable register for each project.
• Scope, brief and manage design subcontractors and consultants; rework substandard work.
• Apply design basis, AEC standard details and approved specifications for consistency.
• Challenge design choices that add cost, time or complexity without contractual, safety or technical justification.
• Lead optioneering and constructability reviews with construction, commercial and procurement.
• Coordinate electrical, civil, structural and mechanical design across portfolios.
• Plan and close out Safety in Design; ensure designs meet Australian Standards and network requirements.
• Manage RFIs, support construction and commissioning, and drive as-built records and handover packs.
• Report design progress, third-party performance, cost and risk to Head of PMO.

All Energy Contracting (AEC) is a leading multidisciplinary construction contractor specialising in renewables and energy infrastructure projects. We deliver projects across solar, wind, battery energy storage systems (BESS), high voltage connections, substations, balance of plant and associated civil, electrical and mechanical works.

About the opportunity

We’re hiring a Design Lead for our Project Management Office (PMO), reporting to the Head of PMO. You’ll manage design across a portfolio of utility and renewable energy projects. That includes design done in-house at AEC and design done by subcontractors, consultants and suppliers.

The role of the Design Lead is to make sure design is consistent from project to project, compliant with the contract and standards, and cost-effective to build.

Key Responsibilities

• Preparing and running the Design Management Plan, design responsibility matrix and deliverable register for each project
• Scope, brief and manage design subcontractors and consultants, and send substandard work back for rework
• Applying the design basis, AEC standard details and approved specifications so design stays consistent across the portfolio
• Challenging design choices that add cost, time or complexity without a contractual, safety or technical reason
• Leading optioneering and constructability reviews with construction, commercial and procurement before the design is frozen
• Coordinating electrical, civil, structural and mechanical design, including protection, earthing, primary plant and OEM equipment
• Planning and closing out Safety in Design, and making sure designs comply with Australian Standards, client specifications and network requirements
• Managing RFIs, supporting construction and commissioning, and driving complete as-built records and handover packs
• Reporting design progress, third-party performance, cost and risk to the Head of PMO, and improving templates and standard details

What you’ll bring

• Bachelor of Engineering. Electrical is preferred, but a related discipline is fine if you have strong utility or renewables experience
• 8+ years in engineering design or design management on utility projects (transmission, distribution, substations) or renewable projects (solar, wind, BESS, hybrid)
• Experience managing design consultants or D&C subcontractors
• Experience coordinating multi-discipline design on construction projects, ideally with an electrical background
• Proven record of delivering consistent, cost-effective design while working with limited supervision
• Sound judgement on cost, constructability and compliance, and strong stakeholder skills with clients, network service providers and consultants
