Job description
Overview

This Canberra headquartered entity is recognised for its strong financial performance, collaborative culture, and public-good mission. With around 150 staff across national offices, the organisation partners closely with government and industry to deliver impactful outcomes.

The Opportunity

Reporting to the CFO, you’ll lead a skilled team responsible for statutory and management reporting, budgeting and forecasting, and compliance under government frameworks. You will also oversee the organisation’s outsourced finance providers, manage contract governance, and ensure clear, value-adding financial advice across the business. This is a senior, visible role with reach across the organisation and its Board. It offers genuine balance – strategic and commercial influence without excessive hours – and supports hybrid work (around 50/50 office and home).

The Role

Your key areas of responsibility will include:

  • Ownership of consolidated financial statements and coordination of external audit
  • Budgeting, forecasting and internal reporting to inform decision-making at all levels
  • Oversight of the budget cycle (PBS) and support for NPP preparation
  • Treasury and investment management, monitoring performance and compliance
  • Cashflow, reserves and working capital management
  • Ensuring compliance with taxation and financial reporting obligations
  • Driving process improvements across finance systems and controls
  • Leading, mentoring and developing a capable finance team
The Ideal Person

You’re a pragmatic, emotionally intelligent senior finance professional who combines strong technical depth (across commercial and government) with an engaging communication style.

You’ll bring:

  • Proven expertise in financial statements, consolidation and audit management
  • Knowledge of the Commonwealth budget cycle, PBS and NPP processes
  • Experience managing outsourced providers
  • Strong understanding of financial governance and compliance in a public or government-linked entity
  • Clearly able to articulate complex financial and commercial concepts for senior non-finance audiences
  • Demonstrated success leading and developing high-performing teams
  • Tertiary qualifications in Accounting, Finance or related field, with CA or CPA essential

You’re confident and self-sufficient, able to take ownership quickly without disrupting existing stability. Your leadership style is empathetic, measured and developmental – someone who builds trust and brings people with them through change.

Salary / Rate
  • $180k – $190k + Super + Bonus
  • Canberra-based permanent, ongoing role
  • Hybrid work pattern (~50/50 office/WFH)
  • Occasional interstate travel required (quarterly, 1–2 nights)
