Job summary

Commonwealth Bank is seeking a Data Scientist, Data Science & AI to lead applied AI solutions within Institutional Banking & Markets. You’ll work with business leaders, engineers and risk specialists to deliver AI initiatives from problem definition to production deployment and ongoing monitoring.

You will combine deep technical expertise with leadership and commercial judgment to shape AI across forecasting, trading, and emerging AI initiatives, while ensuring governance and risk controls are

Qualifications

• Proven track record delivering AI/ML solutions from inception to production.
• Experience in financial markets, quantitative finance, forecasting, derivatives pricing or institutional banking.
• Hands-on expertise in ML, generative AI or agentic AI with strong Python/SQL skills.

Responsibilities

• Lead AI initiatives end to end from problem definition through production deployment and monitoring.
• Set technical direction and maintain toolchains for AI delivery.
• Translate complex markets problems into scalable ML/AI solutions.

As a Data Scientist, Data Science & AI, you’ll lead the design and delivery of applied AI solutions within Institutional Banking. This is a hands-on technical role where you’ll connect advanced modelling, commercial objectives and responsible delivery to create measurable business impact.

You’ll join a technically ambitious team where AI is applied to real opportunities. Working alongside business leaders, engineers, risk specialists and industry partners, you’ll help shape how AI creates commercial impact across forecasting, trading and emerging AI initiatives.

• Lead AI initiatives end to end, from problem definition and experimentation through production deployment and ongoing performance monitoring, and be comfortable opening a new inception while an existing solution remains under your operational watch.
• Set technical direction while staying on the tools.
• Translate complex commercial and markets problems into scalable machine learning and agentic AI solutions.
• Establish and hold the modelling, validation, governance and monitoring practice needed to meet risk and model performance requirements in a regulated environment.
• Partner with business, engineering, risk and governance teams, and with external technology partners, to deliver safe and responsible outcomes.
• Develop data scientists and graduates through coaching, mentoring and technical leadership. Our graduates are already among the strongest AI developers coming through in Australia, so the bar for technical leadership here is set accordingly.
• Drive integration between AI delivery, engineering practice and business process so that solutions land in the business and stay there.
• Influence senior stakeholders by connecting technical decisions to commercial value, P&L and strategic outcomes.
• Design delivery patterns where none exist yet and make them commercially viable. IB&M has a strong record of backing its people to make decisions and own the outcome.
• Apply strong model-risk judgement to AI solutions, including data quality, explainability, validation, drift monitoring and clear accountability for model outcomes.

You combine deep technical expertise with the leadership and commercial judgement required to deliver AI solutions in a complex business environment. You’ll thrive in a role where you’re expected to influence strategy, uplift capability and remain actively involved in technical delivery.

• Have delivered multiple AI or machine learning solutions from inception through to production and monitoring.
• Ideally having current or prior experience working in financial markets, quantitative finance, forecasting, derivative pricing, trading or institutional banking.
• Bring strong hands-on expertise in machine learning, generative AI or agentic AI, supported by programming skills such as Python and SQL.
• Can design solutions that are scalable, maintainable, observable and aligned to risk and governance requirements.
• Have led technical teams, projects or capability uplift initiatives while continuing to contribute directly to delivery outcomes.
• Can partner effectively with engineers, architects, product partners, business leaders and risk specialists.
