Job summary

Morgan McKinley is seeking a hands-on Data Engineer (BI) to own the journey from raw source data to trusted, business-ready reporting in Sydney. You will design the warehouse model, build pipelines, and deliver Power BI reports used across the business.

The role combines BAU and project delivery with shifting priorities in a 6‑month contract likely to extend. You'll bring deep Power BI experience, strong SQL/warehousing fundamentals, and experience with dbt or similar tools.

Qualifications

• Hands-on Power BI development across Desktop and Service.
• Strong SQL and data warehouse fundamentals (Kimball, star/snowflake, SCDs).
• Experience with dbt or similar ETL/ELT tooling.
• Experience with relational warehouses (Redshift, SQL Server) and exposure to AWS.
• Ability to gather requirements from business users and translate into specs.
• 6+ years in data engineering/BI/analytics engineering.

Responsibilities

• Build and maintain source-to-target pipelines using dbt and SQL.
• Develop Power BI reports from scratch: Power Query, DAX, navigation and semantic models.

We are working with a very exciting financial services client, helping to build their data team who are looking for a hands-on Data Engineer to own the journey from raw source data to trusted, business-ready reporting. You'll design the warehouse model, build the pipelines that feed it and deliver Power BI reports that people across the business rely on. Your week will be part BAU and part project delivery, so you'll need to be comfortable when priorities move.

$600-780 all in, ex GST.

What you'll do

• Design and build dimensional models (facts, dimensions, star schemas, SCDs) that make data easy to report on.
• Build and maintain source-to-target pipelines using dbt and SQL.
• Develop Power BI reports from scratch, from Power Query transformations and DAX measures through to navigation, drillthrough and published semantic models.
• Work with stakeholders to capture what they need and turn it into clear written technical specifications.
• Build in data validation, reconciliation and quality controls so reporting can be trusted.
• Tune SQL and models for performance.

What you'll bring

• Recent, hands-on Power BI development experience (Desktop and Service, Power Query, DAX).
• Strong SQL and a solid grasp of warehousing fundamentals: Kimball, star vs snowflake schemas, SCD types, natural and surrogate keys.
• Experience with dbt or a similar transformation and ingestion tool.
• Experience with a relational data warehouse such as Redshift, SQL Server or similar. Exposure to AWS is a plus.
• Confidence working directly with business users and writing technical requirements.
• 4+ years in data engineering, BI development or analytics engineering. Financial services experience is a bonus but not essential.
