Job summary

Vertical Scope Group seeks a senior cybersecurity leader to drive Australia‑based expansion for a leading U.S. client. You will shape the cybersecurity function, lead architecture decisions, and embed into a long‑term leadership role within Australia.

Bring 6–8+ years of experience in defence/government sectors, CISSP, and strong Linux/networking/cloud expertise. Travel across Australia and occasional US travel are required; NV2 clearance is essential.

Qualifications

  • 6–8+ years of cybersecurity experience in defence/government/critical infrastructure.
  • Relevant tertiary qualification or equivalent knowledge.
  • CISSP certification (or equivalent) with ASD cybersecurity credentials.

Responsibilities

  • Define and enforce cybersecurity standards per NIST, ISO/IEC 27001 and ASD Essential Eight.
  • Prepare cybersecurity artifacts for ATO processes, risk registers and evidence.
  • Implement and validate security controls in classified environments per ISM/ACSC.
  • Develop and deploy security tools to address vulnerabilities and automate tasks.
  • Conduct risk assessments, vulnerability testing and security audits.
  • Monitor logs and events to detect, assess and respond to threats.
  • Collaborate with engineering on secure authentication and access control.
  • Evaluate emerging cybersecurity technologies to enhance protection.
  • Communicate security strategies across cross‑functional teams.
  • Provide expert troubleshooting for complex security challenges.

Job description

  • Be the driving force at the center of our client’s Australian Cybersecurity expansion.

About you:
  • 6–8+ years of cybersecurity experience, preferably in defence, government or critical infrastructure sectors
  • Relevant tertiary qualification or equivalent knowledge gained through experience
  • CISSP certification (or equivalent), plus ASD recognized cybersecurity credentials
  • Strong expertise in Linux systems, networking security and cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP)
  • Hands-on experience with security automation and monitoring tools, including Ansible, SIEM platforms (e.g., Splunk, SO2), antivirus (AV) solutions, ACAS, Anchore, SonarQube, and related security technologies
  • Demonstrated ability to lead cybersecurity initiatives, influence architecture decisions and communicate effectively with stakeholders
  • Willingness to travel within Australia to customer and partner locations, including secure government or defence sites, and occasional travel to clients offices in the United States for collaboration or project work.
  • You must also be an Australian citizen, currently holding and able to maintain Australian Government NV2 security clearance.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Define and enforce cybersecurity standards in alignment with NIST, ISO/IEC 27001 and the ASD Essential Eight
  • Support the preparation and submission of cybersecurity artifacts required for ATO processes, including security documentation, risk registers and evidence packages
  • Implement and validate technical security controls in classified environments aligned with Australian ISM and ACSC requirements
  • Develop and deploy security tools to address vulnerabilities, automate tasks and strengthen defences
  • Conduct comprehensive risk assessments, vulnerability testing and security audits
  • Hands-on configuration and monitoring of security tools, analysing logs and security events to detect, assess and respond to threats
  • Collaborate with engineering teams to implement secure authentication, encryption and access control solutions
  • Evaluate and integrate emerging cybersecurity technologies to enhance infrastructure protection
  • Clearly articulate security strategies and collaborate with cross-functional teams to support secure solution delivery
  • Provide expert level troubleshooting and resolution of complex security challenges
