Job summary

Global Skilled Employment Services is seeking a Cropping Production Technician to join a North Central Victoria family-operated agricultural business. The role supports modern cropping, soil preparation, planting, crop management and harvest across about 1,800 hectares of owned, leased and share-farmed land.

You will operate tractors and cropping machinery, monitor crop health, maintain paddock records, assist with soil sampling and fertility planning, and aid the Farm Manager with establishment

Qualifications

• At least an AQF Diploma in Agriculture or related qualification or higher.
• At least one year of recent and relevant work experience.

Responsibilities

• Inspect cropping paddocks and assess soil condition, moisture, crop establishment and general paddock conditions before and during the growing season.
• Assist with soil sampling and the collection of paddock information to identify variations in soil condition, fertility and nutrient requirements.
• Maintain accurate paddock records covering planting, fertiliser applications, crop treatments, harvesting activities, yields and other production information.
• Assist the Farm Manager with planning crop establishment programs, including paddock preparation, planting timing, sowing rates and fertiliser requirements.
• Monitor crops throughout the growing season and report on establishment, plant health, growth, weed pressure, pest or disease concerns and other factors affecting production.
• Identify areas of poor crop performance and assist in investigating possible causes such as soil condition, moisture, nutrient availability, machinery setup or pest and disease pressure.
• Assist with the calibration of seeders, fertiliser equipment, spraying equipment and other farm machinery to achieve the required application or sowing rates.
• Provide practical assistance and guidance to other farm employees in the correct operation of agricultural equipment, recording systems and farm technology.

On behalf of our client, Global Skilled Employment Services is seeking a skilled and experienced Cropping Production Technician to join a family-operated agricultural business in North Central Victoria. The business specialises in broadacre cropping and producing hay and grain crops, including oats, vetch and barley. The farming operation currently extends across approximately 1,800 hectares of owned, leased and share-farmed land and uses modern agricultural machinery and cropping systems to undertake soil preparation, planting, crop management and harvesting.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Operate and monitor modern tractors, seeders, spreaders, harvesting equipment and associated cropping machinery as part of technical field operations.
• Set up and check agricultural machinery before planting, fertilising and harvesting operations to ensure equipment is operating correctly and consistently.
• Assist with the calibration of seeders, fertiliser equipment, spraying equipment and other farm machinery to achieve the required application or sowing rates.
• Monitor machinery performance during field operations and identify irregularities that may affect planting depth, seed placement, fertiliser distribution, application rates or crop outcomes.
• Use available tractor guidance, mapping, monitoring and other agricultural technology systems to support accurate field operations.
• Maintain and update electronic and manual production records generated through farm machinery and cropping activities.
• Review operational and production information with the Farm Manager and assist in identifying opportunities to improve machinery efficiency, paddock performance and crop production.
• Assist with yield monitoring at harvest and compare crop performance between paddocks and production areas.
• Collect and collate crop, yield and production data for use in future planting, fertiliser and crop management decisions.
• Inspect harvested grain and fodder and assist with monitoring product quality, moisture levels and storage requirements.
• Assist with trials of different cropping methods, seed varieties, fertiliser programs or machinery settings where required by the business.
• Support the introduction and use of new farming technology and equipment as the business expands its broadacre and irrigated cropping operations.
• Provide practical assistance and guidance to other farm employees in the correct operation of agricultural equipment, recording systems and farm technology.
• Liaise with agronomists, agricultural suppliers, machinery technicians and other external advisers when technical assistance is required.
• Assist with routine inspection and preventative maintenance of farm machinery, electronic monitoring equipment and associated agricultural systems.
• Identify faults or irregularities in machinery and agricultural technology and arrange servicing or specialist technical assistance where necessary.
• Ensure machinery settings, paddock records and production information are accurately maintained throughout the season.
• Participate in seasonal planning meetings and provide observations and information obtained through field inspections and production monitoring.
• Carry out all work in accordance with farm safety procedures, chemical handling requirements and workplace health and safety obligations.
• Undertake other related technical agricultural duties reasonably required by the Farm Manager.
