The Domestic Violence Crisis Service (DVCS) is looking for a Criminal Justice Advocate to join the Legal Advocacy Team.

THE ORGANISATION

DVCS is a non-government, not-for-profit specialist domestic and family violence service that seeks to reduce violence and abuse in relationships. DVCS provides crisis and long-term support services to help break the domestic and family violence cycle. DVCS is here to support people, both during and after crisis situations as well as support programs for those who use violence, with the aim of bringing about change.

DUTIES

The Criminal Justice Advocate role include:

Providing information and support to clients who have experienced DFV and have matters in the criminal justice system

Ensuring clients are informed regularly and in a timely manner of the progress of their matters through the criminal justice system

Conducting risk assessments and undertaking safety planning

Liaising and networking with relevant government agencies, including Magistrate and Supreme Courts, ACT Policing, Office of Director of Public Prosecution, ACT Corrective Services and Child, Youth and Families.

Maintaining accurate and up to date records

Providing telephone follow-up and advocacy services to people affected by domestic and family violence, particularly those with matters within the criminal justice system

SELECTION CRITERIA

All applicants must meet and address the following Selection Criteria in writing.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to liaise with a wide variety of people.

Knowledge and understanding of domestic and family violence, its impacts across the community and the issues that face people who are affected, including people with complex needs who require a range of system responses.

Well-developed client-centred responses for people who are experiencing or have experienced trauma.

Demonstrated experience or knowledge of the criminal justice system and other legal responses to domestic and family violence in the ACT, or the ability to quickly obtain such knowledge.

Ability to prioritise competing tasks and ensure deadlines are met and expectations managed when issues arise.

Self-motivated with the ability to work independently anduse initiative.

Demonstrated commitment to the values of equity, inclusion and diversity.

Current ACT Working with Vulnerable People Card.
