Job description

Who is Shift?
Shift provides business finance to small, established and corporate sized businesses in Australia, including Business Overdraft, Equipment Line, Asset Finance, Term Loan and Trade Account. Founded in 2014, Shift has funded more than 30,000 Australian businesses.

At Shift, our unique approach to product innovation combined with our collaborative culture means you can build your career in a supportive environment. You’ll be joining a diverse team of over 300 people who are always looking to deliver better outcomes for Australian businesses.

About the Role

As Credit Risk Manager at Shift, you will be responsible for credit decisioning of escalated originations within our Small Business Division (SBD). With Delegated Lending Authority (DLA) up to $500K, you will handle scorecard referrals unresolved by Customer Solutions, focusing especially on at-the-margin cases that require judgment. This role is essential in delivering consistent, accountable credit standards and supporting SBD’s growth by consolidating credit decisioning under a single function.

As Shift further develops its digital and automated capabilities, your focus will evolve to include originations credit strategy, in-life (Continuous Credit) settings, and process and digital design, drawing on insights from hands-on decisioning.

What You’ll Do
Credit Decisioning

Decision escalated scorecard referrals outside standard rules, exercising DLA up to $500K.

Own judgment-based decisions and applications just outside policy, approving, restructuring, or declining in line with risk appetite and credit policy.

Deliver escalated referral decisions within agreed service standards, targeting under one business day turnaround.

Act as the escalation point for complex or material credit cases across SBD.

Credit Standards & Strategy

Set and document credit standards for at-the-margin cases, including complexity assessment.

Progressively codify judgment-based decisions into policy and scorecard rules, reducing avoidable referrals.

Refine SBD’s originations credit strategy using insights from escalated decisions.

Input into continuous credit settings and participate in hindsight reviews of escalated decisions.

Data, Insights & Performance

Establish, measure, and report monthly on service standards for escalated referrals.

Track and report on escalation rates, turnaround times, and decision outcomes.

Inform policy, scorecard, and process improvements based on exception and loss experience.

Decisioning Transition & Stakeholder Management

Lead the transition of credit decisioning from Customer Solutions into SBD.

Standardise escalation pathways for referred deals.

Partner with the Customer Solutions Manager to optimise team capacity for customer and broker engagement.

Represent credit decisioning across SBD Product, Technology, and Operations initiatives.

Process & Digital Design

Provide credit input into digital experience design by leveraging direct decisioning experience.

Identify manual controls and gaps in originations credit processes.

Support standardisation of credit guidance and documentation.

Ensure process changes are well-governed and operationally supported.

Skills & Experience

Strong understanding of credit risk principles, portfolio management, and risk appetite frameworks.

Analytical abilities with proficiency in data interpretation and Excel-based reporting.

Sound credit judgment with the ability to make timely, well-reasoned decisions and structure mitigants for complex deals.

Excellent stakeholder engagement and communication skills, including the ability to clearly explain decision rationales.

Proficiency in financial statement analysis, bureau data, and banking transactions; familiarity with automated and digital decisioning.

5+ years’ experience in credit risk, credit assessment, or lending roles (including holding a DLA).

Experience in small business or commercial lending highly regarded.

Demonstrated ability to assess complex applications.

Familiarity with credit risk frameworks, scorecard-based decisioning, and referral management.

Experience interpreting Probability of Default (PD) metrics for exposure and limit setting.

Demonstrated success in translating decisioning outcomes into policy, scorecard, or process improvements.

Qualifications

Relevant qualification in finance, economics, risk management, or a related discipline – preferred but not essential.
